Modern Industrial Beach Cottage

EmeraldeRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
Such a lovely weekend retreat. Small and cozy, great shower, very functional small kitchen, and the Murphy bed was large and comfortable. Beautiful location, easy walk to the beach and very convenient to the Scarborough Marsh, which was a huge highlight. Wendy was so friendly and helpful and got back to me quickly with answers to all my questions. Highly recommend!

Breezy Beach Bungalow on Old Orchard Beach

CandiceRating, 5 stars1 week ago
This apartment was extremely clean. The king size beds were exceptionally comfortable. The decor was very fitting for a beach side apartment. It is a basement apartment so there were people staying above us and we could hear some noise but it wasn’t disruptive to us. Unfortunately we did not have good weather so we could not take advantage of the outside patio area. We felt very comfortable there and we appreciated the cleanliness. We enjoyed our stay. We would stay here again.

Magical

CharlieRating, 5 stars8 months ago
Third year we’ve stayed there. Very well equipped unit. New sofa this year. The screened in porch overlooking the beach is a big attraction for us. You’re on the beach, so access isn’t an issue. Not one of the busier sections of the beach, but it’s a short walk to the areas with shops. An always accessible parking space, and an elevator to the upper floors is a plus.

Jennifer's Home is wonderful. This is the second time we stayed there. The place was immaculate, the kitchen is excellent with everything you would need. Loved some of the suttle touches made to the place since last time. Jennifer has a special place and we will be back!

Naughty Dog Private Island Log Cabin

AbhinavRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Naughty Dog Island is the perfect private family getaway. We paddled, fished (and even caught), played board games next to a cozy fire and grilled up some delicious burgers. Kent and crew had us equipped with everything we needed for a Mine lake holiday. They are gracious hosts and this cabin is such a hidden gem a mere stone throw’s from Portland. The best part was the fabulous time our pup had. We will certainly be returning!

Houseboat ROAM on Lake Pemaquid, Mid Coast Maine

E ChinRating, 5 stars7 months ago
What an idyllic experience. Truly the best experience surrounded by nature- water, tree line, loons, etc. Nothing quite like waking up to 2 loons outside your float, the sun beaming in and the calm sounds of water, or going to sleep with a sky full of stars and the milky way beaming down on you. The boat was so quaint, so functional and everything you need for a relaxing stay, including two very powerful gas stoves good for cooking most meals, and a nice warm shower while you look out into the pond. It was a very easy paddle to shore if you wanted to go out for food, or for daytime adventures. Also a very gentle paddle around the pond for exploration. Rheanna was fantastic- responsive, welcoming and easy to get along with. She was very accommodating and we are very grateful we got to stay on her boathouse. It was a very easy and comfortable stay, so for those feeling apprehensive about the challenges of life on a boat, I wouldn't worry. The highest of recommendations! We'll be back!

Lakefront Log Cabin escape-boats-fishing-hot tub

NicholaRating, 5 stars7 months ago
Just returned from the most fantastic 2 weeks exploring the US which included a weeks stay at Kiwi Lodge. Where to start? This was exactly as described and the perfect base for exploring Maine. The property was spotless and has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. 3 beautiful bedrooms, 2 great sized bathrooms, wonderful living area and kitchen and fantastic games room. Hot tub was brilliant. The location on the lake is just perfect, we had the lake to ourselves and took the canoe out. Nearest town of Farmington has all the shops and cafes you’d need. The communication from Kay was great from the day we booked, and recommendations we took her up on were all absolutely spot on. Thank you Kay and thank you Kiwi Lodge for a holiday to remember!

Relax by a Quiet Lake

LoriRating, 5 stars5 days ago
We had a truly lovely stay at this cozy lakeside cabin. The setting is everything you’d hope for—peaceful, scenic, and full of charm. Mornings were magical, with beautiful sunrises enjoyed from the porch. We took the canoe out at sunset and it was just perfect—calm water, glowing skies, and total serenity. The cabin is simple, clean, and full of character. We felt completely relaxed and rejuvenated. Highly recommend for anyone looking to slow down and soak in the beauty of nature.

Updated waterfront 3bd/2ba on Balch Lake

AlyshaRating, 5 stars8 months ago
We had a wonderful stay at this charming lake house! The place was clean and comfortable and it truly felt like a home away from home. Our host was incredibly friendly and responsive, making the check-in process seamless. The bunk beds were a huge hit with the kids – they absolutely loved having their own little space! We had so much fun kayaking on the lake and even managed to do a bit of fishing. The peaceful surroundings made our stay special. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a quiet spot!

Faith Lane with community pool

MeghanRating, 5 stars8 months ago
Beautiful house! Lots of space and had everything you need for your visit. The community pool was great too. Very close to Portland and easy to get to other areas of Maine from the location. Jason was a great host and very responsive and helpful! Only minor complaint was mattresses upstairs were a little on the firm side but other than that the house was great!

The host was amazing. Relaxing atmosphere. We were able to bring our little dog. Bedrooms were a great size and beds were comfortable. Really enjoyed having a washer and dryer and two bathrooms. Home was very clean and tidy. We look forward to coming back again next year! Great location..close the waterfront and just a short drive to Portland. Local grocery store was just down the road. TV in every room was a bonus!

The Nifty Village House

RobertaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
I rented the place on behalf of the organization I work for in Norway Maine -- the Center for an Ecology Based Economy. We rented Michael's Nifty Village House for it proximity to our new annual Convergence venue, and because it was highly recommende by one of our staff members who's family had stayed there recently and loved it. We offered to put up four of our presenters from away, including our keynote speaker. They were unanimously impressed by and delighted with the place. It met all needs and as one guest put it "felt like home, only tidier and cleaner!" We hope to be in the same venue next year (the Celebration Barn Theather, a wonderful place in its own right) and do hope the Michael's place will be available once again for our guests from away. Thank you Michael!

Your guide to Southern Maine Coast

Welcome to the Southern Maine Coast

The Southern Maine Coast — roughly the region south of Portland to the New Hampshire border — is quintessential Maine. Fair warning: it may also be unlike the Maine Coast of your preconceptions. It has some of the rocky headlands and stormy seas associated with the state, but in many ways the terrain here is less formidable, with expansive sandy beaches backed by beach towns bustling in summer.

Yet it’s not Cape Cod or the Jersey Shore — the water is often frigid, infiltrated as it is by the Labrador Current flowing from the Arctic Ocean into the Atlantic. Even in midsummer, bathing can require stamina, grit, and moderate to extreme shrieking. And it’s not all about beach towns on the Southern Maine Coast. On rainy days, or when you don’t feel like swimming, you can explore bird sanctuaries, marshlands, pocket harbors dotted with lobster boats, and colonial-era villages filled with historic home museums, restaurants, t-shirt shops, and art galleries.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Southern Maine Coast

Summer is peak travel season in Southern Maine, and the vast majority of visitors come for the warm days, active beach scene, and gallery shows and regional theater productions. Irksome bugs can persist early in the summer, especially when exploring the forests or marshlands — the ocean breeze usually keeps the mosquitoes and blackflies at bay at the beaches. If crowds aren’t your thing, aim to visit in the shoulder season, when the weather is less predictable and cooler, but you’ll have the trails and beaches more to yourself. Winter is a good time for an outdoor fire and self-introspection. Dress for cold weather November through April, and hope for calm and sunny days for walks along the beach.

Top things to do in Southern Maine Coast

Old Orchard Beach

At peak summer, tourists overflow the beaches and roam the shops of this resort town with roots deep in the 19th century. It’s got a classic beach town vibe, with amusement rides, carnival attractions, and a long, crowded pier offering fried foods and games. Take a stroll through the Salvation Army’s grounds, featuring an outdoor amphitheater, off Circuit Street, and swing by the intriguing and octagonal Temple at Ocean Park, a Baptist church built in 1881 in the Ocean Park neighborhood south of the town.

Mount Agamenticus

For a bird’s-eye view of the coast and beyond, hike up Mount Agamenticus, a 692-foot prominence outside the town of York. (You can also drive to the top, but that’s not half the adventure.) The rounded peak sits in a state park, and on a clear day offers sweeping views from Cape Ann in Massachusetts. Turn around and face west for a view of the raggedy ridgelines of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Seashore Trolley Museum

Kennebunkport is home to the first and largest electric railway museum in the world, with three hangar-sized barns filled with specimens of urban transport from around the globe, including Glasgow, Budapest, Montreal, Rome, and San Francisco. Most are idle or undergoing restoration. Some stock is always on the roll, however, offering visitors rides along a two-mile track through a forest.
