Discover Iconic Sights and Greener Pastures with an England Vacation

Fabulous Day trips from London

While London promises lively happenings and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, there are many close-by towns that are well-suited for daytrippers. England is much more than just its capital, so why not rent your own set of wheels, or hop on a train to discover the surrounding areas?

Fall for Brighton’s Coastal Charisma

Maze Through Oxford’s Quaint Streets

Famed for its prestigious university campus, Oxford is a walkable town of architectural standouts. The best way to explore is by foot, and you may want to take a guided tour to get a fascinating insight into the history of the city. Many of the buildings here were used as filming locations for Harry Potter, which comes as no surprise considering their magical qualities. Oxford is just an hour’s train ride away from London's Paddington Station.

Punt Around in Cambridge

Another renowned university town that gathers locals and tourists alike is Cambridge. Situated less than an hour by train from King’s Cross Station, Cambridge is smaller and even more walkable than Oxford. While you’re here, pay a visit to the beautiful King’s College Chapel, complete with high arched ceilings and colorful stained glass windows. Then why not hop aboard a mini gondola and enjoy a chauffeured punting tour down the River Cam?

Find Picturesque Villages in The Cotswold

If you’re dreaming of rolling hills, market towns, and quaint stone houses, you’ll find it all in Cotswold. Nature lovers will revel in the outdoor experiences on offer, whether it’s hiking the Cotswold Way or Thames Path, or mountain biking through scenic byways and bridleways. Laden with gardens, wildlife, and castles, it is no surprise these fairytale-esque lands inspired magical stories such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Harry Potter. If you’re a fan of Shakespeare, don’t miss a chance to venture to his charming hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon. Take a stroll through the ancient town to marvel at period houses of the Tudor period and walk in the famous playwright’s footsteps. When it’s time for a break, pick your favorite spot along the Avon River to enjoy a picnic with a view.

Visit Windsor Castle, the Queen’s Weekend Residence

Only an hour away from central London, Windsor Castle is sure to impress you with: with over 1,000 years of royal history, it is the biggest occupied castle on the planet. Spend a day marveling at the many lavish chambers and breathing in the same fresh air that Her Majesty The Queen herself enjoys. Opt for a private tour to explore the palace’s selection of fine art and peculiarities such as Queen Mary’s elaborate dollhouse, modeled to-the-tee after a royal manoir.

Venture Inside the Walls of the Bodiam Castle

Just like the royal structures that you see in films, the Bodiam Castle perfectly captures the essence of medieval times. The castle even has its own tea room where you can enjoy a warm beverage and a scone as you watch the old steam train pull into Bodiam station. Surrounded by a moat and accessed only via its one bridge, the castle is in East Sussex and just a 2-hour drive from central London. Make a full day of it by journeying a little further south to Rye, a lovely seaside town with cobbled streets and medieval houses. Known for its fresh seafood, Rye hosts a scallop festival every February. And if you’re there in the warmer months, make sure to bring your bathing suit to lounge on the nearby sandy strip of beach.

Journey Back to Medieval Times in York

A step back to medieval times, York’s historical riches combined with its offerings of lively pubs and cafés make it a worthwhile day trip. Having been occupied previously by Romans and Vikings, the city’s cultural charms are everywhere. Your first stop will likely be the ornate York Minster, a gothic cathedral surrounded by narrow streets and 13th-century walls. After you’ve had your fill of history, get lost in the winding streets, packed with spots to indulge in afternoon tea or perhaps a beverage (or two). Daily trains leave from London’s King’s Cross Station, and the journey is only 2 hours each way.

Admire the Grandeur of the White Cliffs of Dover

Spend the day admiring nature’s wonders with a visit to the White Cliffs of Dover. Located on the English coast facing France, the cliffs are lightly marked by walking paths where you’ll be able to look out for miles and miles. On a clear day, you may even spot France’s coastline. Get your camera ready — the contrast between the white rocks, verdant lands, and azure waters mimic a scene from a painting.
