Puerto Vallarta Malecon
Vibrant seaside promenade featuring sculptures, live performances, and local cuisine
Summarized by AI
Walk the pedestrian-only Malecon to see its famous bronze sculptures, detailed sandcastle displays, and open-air art all along the seawall. Snack on street food, browse regional handicrafts and galleries, and catch free performances like the Voladores de Papantla and nightly shows at the Los Arcos amphitheater. Come at sunset for wide views over Banderas Bay and stay as bars, restaurants, and nightclubs fill with music. If you’re here around November 1, look for the Catrinas honoring Día de los Muertos.

Los Muertos Beach Pier
Iconic sail-shaped pier offering scenic coastal views, water taxis, and vibrant nightlife nearby
Summarized by AI
At Los Muertos Beach Pier you can walk the 100-meter stretch out over Banderas Bay, sit on the benches around the sail-shaped monument, and enjoy relaxed people-watching, ocean breezes, and colorful sunsets by day or night. Use the pier as your launch point for water taxis (pangas) to beaches like Yelapa, Las Animas, Quimixto, Los Arcos, and other spots only accessible by boat. Around the pier, you’ll find popular beachside restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and plenty of shops for exploring.

Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Historic church known for its crown-topped spire, neo-baroque style, and cultural significance
Summarized by AI
Step inside Puerto Vallarta’s largest and nearly century-old Catholic church to see its ornate altar, classical neo-baroque architecture, and the iconic crown-topped bell tower that defines the skyline. Attend a regular service or the 10am Sunday English mass, and consider leaving a small donation to support this still-active parish. In early December, experience the Fiestas Guadalupanas with nightly processions, folkloric dancers, and mariachi music. Outside, enjoy the colorful flags, nearby plaza, restaurants, and evening food market.

Municipal Market Emiliano Zapata
Authentic market offering fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and local delicacies
Summarized by AI
At Municipal Market Emiliano Zapata you can stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, shrimp, meats, cheeses, tortillas, and deli items at local prices. Watch the on-site corn tortilla factory turn out warm tortillas by the kilo, then grab fresh-squeezed pineapple or other fruit juices, even bringing your own container if you like. Pick up ready-to-eat foods, from euro-style meats and sandwiches to cheap, filling plates and awesome quesadillas with plenty of chili sauces and guacamole. Nearby, a friendly Italian expat sells homemade pesto, panna cotta, and ravioli, and an authentic seafood burrito stand serves fresh burritos with aguas frescas.

All about Puerto Vallarta
From sleepy fishing village to one of Mexico’s top resort destinations, Puerto Vallarta is a place of many moods. Located on the Pacific coast of Jalisco, the city and nearby towns are oriented around the Bay of Banderas, where migrating whales and dolphins play. Newer communities wrap around the bay’s north end, toward Nuevo Vallarta and Punta Mita, where gated enclaves attract celebrities with sprawling golf courses and increasingly luxurious amenities. The laid-back beach towns to the north draw surfers and RVers, while the older part of Puerto Vallarta proper is home to American and Canadian snowbirds and retirees, many of whom eventually make their vacations permanent.
Restaurants, markets, art galleries, and taco stands line the cobblestone streets, and open-air beachfront palapas house dozens of restaurants where you can dine with your toes in the sand. While strolling past the iconic cathedral and down the seaside malecon (a pedestrian promenade studded with palm trees and contemporary sculptures), it’s easy to see what made the Hollywood set fall so in love with the place in the 1960s.
What are the top things to do in Puerto Vallarta?
Wednesday Night ArtWalk
Every Wednesday evening during high season (late October to late May), Puerto Vallarta’s downtown galleries host a kind of communal open house, keeping their doors open late as art lovers mill about drinking wine and checking out the latest exhibitions from the region’s renowned contemporary painters, sculptors, and photographers. Notable stops include Galería Uno, the city’s oldest gallery, and Galería Pacifico.
San Sebastián del Oeste
Founded in 1605, this silver-mining town in the Sierra Madre mountains offers a glimpse at what colonial life was like in Jalisco, and makes a great day-trip from the city (it’s about a 90-minute scenic drive from downtown). Visit its historic churches and haciendas, and for those interested in spirits, check out the regional drink raicilla — a type of piney mezcal distilled from cooked agave.
Sayulita and San Pancho
Colorful papel picado flutters above the cobblestone streets of the picture-postcard pueblo mágico (magical town) of Sayulita, in the state of Nayarit, about a 45-minute drive from the airport. Shop for jewelry and crafts in the pastel-colored boutiques, take a surf lesson, or join a yoga retreat. Up the road in San Pancho, you’ll find laid-back village vibes and art made by the local Huichol community.
