Casa de las Mariposas (Butterfly House), Mazunte, Oaxaca, Mexico.

MarkRating, 5 stars2 months ago
Staying at Sarah’s home in Mazunte, ‘La Casa de las Mariposas’, is a unique and remarkable experience. The house is a 2-storey circular palapa constructed in organic forms out of wood, concrete and plaster, and set high in the hills above Mazunte and the Pacific ocean. Sarah built this house herself, with exceptional care and attention to detail, and lived in it for seven years. There are a few drawbacks to consider: While people apparently do walk up the steep road from Mazunte, we are too fat and old to even consider that (we managed fine using our tiny rental car). The kitchen is fairly well-equipped but the oven is slow, so allow 4 hours to roast a chicken. There are some rules to follow: separate your garbage, don’t leave out food scraps, no streaming movies on the internet, don’t flush toilet paper, and don’t pee in the shower. However, for us this place represented Mazunte’s slow and quirky off-the-grid lifestyle that, and comes highly recommended if that fits you.
A spacious room with a high wooden ceiling features a comfortable bed adorned with colorful textiles. A unique hanging chair adds a decorative touch, while a curved window allows natural light to brighten the space. Rustic wooden elements enhance the room's natural ambience.

My stay at New Ruins was absolutely fabulous. If your spirit is called to have this experience here, you are quite lucky. I had great conversations with the other guest and the overall energy was wonderful. Nico is a super cool guy who is full of jokes and has a very likable personality, he is very chill and easy to get a long with. If you are not used to living in harmony with nature then staying here could be an adjustment for you. I was totally in my element and it was more than ideal for time I spent.

Casa Labra - Labra House Etla, Oaxaca

Ximena's place felt like staying at a friend's beloved home. There's a relaxed, comfy vibe, as shown in the photos, but actually being there, is hard to find words for. It's just very special. Both my friend and I cherished our time there. Some words of advice, pack in your favorite foods, coffee, granola, there's only a small bodega down the road, and frankly once you've landed, you won't wanna leave. The first night Jhonny gave us the name of a wonderful local woman who on relatively short notice prepared us a lovely, healthy meal. Or, venture out to the small restaurant in the village. We ate delicious quesadillas made with fresh tortillas. On hikes, we were told to carry a stick to deter dogs. We never used them but good advice for anyone walking on country roads in Mexico. The dogs we saw were sun sleeping in the middle of the roads. Like I said, it's a good relaxing spot. We loved using the washing machine and hanging our clothes out to dry. We got emotional leaving.

Bethania's place was beautiful, verdant, had a wonderful garden, and convenient to the surrounding area. She communicated well with me, was thorough in instructions on accessing and using the property, and was very responsive. I would gladly recommend the place to anyone looking for a peaceful, beautiful, restful stay.

Peace, quiet & nature. Casa Axolotl, bungalow #2

ArnaudRating, 5 stars4 months ago
Heavenly place. It's up a hill, then you will have to climb for it but it's worth it as the view is beautiful and it's quiet over there. If you are looking for a place that is "direct to the sea", it is not for you. It's clearly "rustic" (climbing, surrounded by wild life, cold water - but honestly, whatever the season you don't need it...etc) but that is what makes its charm. The owner is adorable too. I recommend !

CASA TLALOC. Unique. Beautiful. Art.

RossRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We loved our stay. Beautiful location. Well thought out space with wonderful garden and ethos. It did end up being a bit further from central Oaxaca than we had originally thought, but it wasn’t an issue for us. This place is in the mountains so if you are squeamish about bugs keep that in mind you are close to nature. Host was super responsive and kind. Also, they provide purified water! We missed this when we booked and accidently brought plastic in, but the host took care of the recycling with no fuss. Would absolutely book again.

It’s a beautiful designed place, the rooms but also the common areas. I don’t think the pictures do the place justice - it’s even better! I loved that they celebrate the different cultures and tradition Oaxaca has to offer and that they take care of their environment. Perfect example how luxury and sustainability can go together. Also the people working here are super nice and easy reachable for questions through phone but also real life. Would recommend to go here if you’re in Oaxaca city. Ps: if you do, please do yourself a favour and visit Onno Panderia a couple of hundred meters to the centre. Best pastry of my life.

This was such a special stay, beautiful rooms and shared spaces, and a peaceful rooftop terrace. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, and it felt like a place with purpose and connections to the wider community and culture in Oaxaca. We were at a happy temperature with the fan provided, and enjoyed the homemade soap and shampoo. The kitchen was well equipped if we ever needed it, and we had an impromptu coffee tasting session at the attached cafe that is due to open soon. We will definitely be back here on our next visit to Oaxaca!
