The space
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
THE LOOK & FEEL: Casa Maya was constructed as the Maya have for over a thousand years - with an oval shape, mud and stone walls (now finished with cement and plaster) and a thatched roof for natural cooling. The floors are polished concrete.
It has eco-artisanal decor, an indoor sitting and dining area and spacious bathroom made with natural materials, artistic flare and hand-crafted features and furniture.
COOLING & STORAGE: Fans and optional air conditioning make sure your stay will be comfortable. There is ample closet and storage space, a private entrance from the street and another two doors to the garden.
WORK OPTIONS
If you need to work, there are plenty of power outlets and quiet seating areas on the grounds, in the open but protected areas (dining and living room palapa) and on the table in your own unit.
OPEN CONCEPT SPACE:
The primary queen bed is on the ground level behind the main sitting area.
PROXIMITY TO THE STREET
The Maya House is situated near to the street, which means there can be traffic noise. The main large doors opposite the entry door open to the beautiful garden where you'll find a peaceful relaxing atmosphere.
PROXIMITY TO THE KITCHEN
The Maya House is also close to the common kitchen. We ask guests to respect quiet at 10 pm but there may be other guests preparing or eating food close to your room. When my husband and I are in Mexico for the 6 months a year (fall & winter), we always chose to live in the Maya House because, in spite of what may initially seem like drawbacks, there are too many things we really enjoy about it - the thatch roof and thick stone walls give a very peaceful vibe - best sleeps ever!. The large doors to the garden offer a great indoor/outdoor feeling. And the kitchen being close is very convenient.
POSSIBLE EXTRA SLEEPING LOCATION: The sitting room sofa can serve as a narrow bed for a younger child (26" x 93" with 4" mattress).
HAMMOCKS: The property has 3 king size hammocks to enjoy in the garden or in the covered living room palapa. This unit also has 2 dedicated double size hammocks.
KITCHEN: A well equipped kitchen is shared with guests from the other 2 units on the property. All guests cooperate to keep it clean.
THE CITY OF VALLADOLID: El Jardin is a short walk to the centre of the beautiful city of Valladolid, full of rich Mayan and colonial heritage and a diverse array of restaurants, artisan and boutique shops, markets, museums and parks wait to be explored.
Valladolid has always been a great base to explore most of Yucatan's major destinations. Within a 2 hour drive you will find exciting cenotes, world-renowned archeological sites and a myriad of other local culture gems that invite you to feel the warmth of the Yucatan and its vibrant Indigenous culture.
Guest access
The whole garden with the the pool is available for your enjoyment and for guests in the other 2 units on the property. The shared kitchen has plenty of pots, pans, plates and essentials to cook your own meals if you wish.
Other things to note
There are 2 other units on the property.
There is plenty of street parking.
We have one travel crib for an infant.
POOL
Our outdoor pool is unheated. Our pool man that comes 3 times a week to clean it, remove leaves and check levels. Our gardener also comes by daily to sweep leaves from the patios, paths, pool deck and pool. However, on windy days, leaves will still blow into the pool so you're welcome to grab a net and give it a go. Otherwise, our gardener will take care of them when he comes by next.
If you'd like to swim at night, the light switch is inside the tall cement cube beside the pool and beside the huge traveler palm tree. Open the little wooden door on the back and bring your phone light to find the switch (bottom left).
The pool does NOT have a fence around it so this might not be a suitable place if you have small children who might be unsupervised or can't swim. Parents are responsible for their own children.
KITCHEN
You are welcome to use and leave staples in the kitchen (oil, sugar etc).
The kitchen is fairly close to the Maya House
MEXICO TOILETS
If you've been to Mexico before, you'll know that toilet paper goes into the bin beside the toilet.
BBQs
We have a round low charcoal grill - rather rudimentary but it works. You can find it against the back wall.
