Pure bliss.
Wake up to an exquisite view of the garden and pool.
El Jardin is a private tropical oasis for international travelers seeking unique experiences. Inspired by renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán’s architecture and philosophy of garden living, El Jardin is a place to rest or stir your senses.
Best of all, it's only a short 10 min walk from the centre of beautiful Colonial Valladolid.

The space
This magical space is grounded in a lush natural environment, complemented by vibrant architecture with a minimalist aesthetic.
This earth (barro) colored unit is a large comfortable 1 bedroom with a king bed, A/C, 2 fans, a spacious wardrobe, a newly renovated bathroom with a hot water rain shower facing a private indoor garden.
It has an indoor sitting area in front of glass doors that face the garden where you can hang out or work if needed. There is also a stand-up desk area.
Beyond its private terrace, guests share the garden space, pool area, kitchen, eating area and large covered palapa with guests from only 2 other units. If you need to work, there are plenty of power outlets and quiet seating areas on the grounds.
For those traveling with friends or family, this unit is connected to another similar unit by a lock-out door through the bathroom should you be interested in renting both units. Email me for the link.
We also have a pack-n-play infant travel crib (first come first serve basis).
El Jardin is a short walk to the centre of the beautiful Colonial city of Valladolid, where a diverse array of restaurants, artisan and boutique shops, markets, museums and parks wait to be explored.
Discover the warmth of the Yucatan and its Indigenous culture, both in Valladolid and within a 2 hour drive to most of the peninsula’s major destinations.

Guest access
There is a fully-equipped outdoor shared kitchen and dining area, sitting area, pool with sundeck and shallow water pool that’s ideal for young children to splash around in.

Other things to note
ON-SITE PARKING There are 2 other units on the property. There is one private parking space available on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is plenty of street parking.
EXTRA "BED" If you have a third person or child with you, we have one double-size, bed-height air mattress available on a first-come-first-serve basis (additional $25/night).
SUMMER POWER OUTAGES The summers in the Yucatan have been extremely hot the past few years and our old city's electrical grid is having a hard time keeping up with a lot of new construction and ever more air conditioners. Inexplicably the power grid for the street lights is separate from the one the houses run on so sometimes there will be light in the street but none in the houses. These outages will likely increase every year till the city builds a new, more powerful transformer. We do what we can under the circumstances - flashlights in all the rooms and lots of candles but still there are logistics like our electric doorbell and the food in the fridge for example. Luckily most outages last at most an hour till they reset the overload switch. The most difficult thing to deal with is the loss of air conditioning. We ask for your understanding and good will.
BABY CRIB We have one travel crib for an infant also available on a first-come-first-serve basis.
POOL INFO Our outdoor pool is unheated. We have scheduled cleaning in place - a pool man that comes 3 x a week to clean and check levels but on occasion, especially on windy days, leaves blow into the pool.
If you'd like to go for a swim at night, you can turn on the lights in the pool. The switch is inside the tall cube beside the pool beside the huge traveler palm tree. Open the little wooden door on the back and bring your phone light to find the switch.
KITCHEN SUPPLIES You are welcome to use any staples you find in the kitchen (oil, sugar etc).
GARDENER Our gardener comes by daily. The entire property gets swept each morning but if its a windy day, leaves can blow around landing on the parths and in the pool.
GRILL The BBQ grill is a low charcoal grill - rather rudimentary but it works.
The pool has no fence around it so this might not be a suitable place if you have small children who might be unsupervised or can't swim.

Neighborhood highlights

The street is similar to others you'll find in many parts of the city, with a variety of houses and small businesses ranging from the humble to the well-appointed but mostly everything in between. The people are friendly and happy to greet you although most don't speak much English. The neighbourhood is safe.

My work: Retired TV producer
Speaks Dutch, English, and Spanish
We're 2 Canadians who happily reinvented our lives in Mexico when we retired. A manufacturing accountant and TV producer living our best life in our tropical garden in the Yucatan. I paint and Frank dedicates himself to keeping leaves out of the pool. We enjoy the local culture - especially having garden dinners with friends & eating out. So don’t forget to ask for my list of favourite Valladolid restaurants.
