The Garden Folly Guest House

Our architect said, “this is NOT a garage, it’s a Garden Folly!” Our Guest House has a bird’s eye view of the rose covered pecan tree and a vista of the marsh and the Wappoo Creek. When we rebuilt our 1930's garage we saved all the beaded siding and pine floor. My husband enjoyed incorporating many design elements and creative ideas. It was quickly becoming the Taj Garage. We decided it was just the kind of property we enjoy when we travel, so, Voila! we decided to share it with you!

Charleston City Market

Vibrant historic market featuring local crafts, sweetgrass baskets, and Southern charm

Summarized by AI

Explore one of the nation’s oldest public markets, a four-block historic complex dating to the 1790s with Greek Revival-style Market Hall and open-air sheds. Walk through bustling aisles of hundreds of local vendors selling sweetgrass baskets woven by Gullah artisans, handmade jewelry, artwork, textiles, home goods, t‑shirts, and quirky trinkets. Sullivan's Island Beach

Quiet, natural beach offering serene shorelines, historic landmarks, and charming local eateries

Summarized by AI

At Sullivan’s Island Beach you get a wide, natural, mostly quiet shoreline with big sand dunes, soft sand, and typically smaller waves thanks to an offshore sandbar—great for small children, peaceful walks, and plenty of space to spread out. Explore the maritime forest behind the beach, where wild vegetation protects the dunes and shelters island flora and fauna, and look for the square-shaped lighthouse and wooden boardwalk access points. Expect a low-key, non-commercialized atmosphere with no restrooms or restaurants directly on the sand. After your beach time, head into the small town for burgers at Poe’s Tavern, tacos and drinks at Mex 1, barbecue at Home Team BBQ, seafood at Sullivan’s Fish Camp, a nicer meal at The Obstinate Daughter/Obstinate Barber, a casual pub stop at Dunleavy’s, frose at The Co-op, or ice cream at Bearded Williams.

James Island County Park

Expansive park featuring biking trails, a climbing wall, a water park, and seasonal holiday lights

Summarized by AI

Spend the day biking or walking miles of paved trails, letting kids loose on the big playground and seasonal spray fountain, or cooling off at Splash Zone Waterpark. Fish or crab from the docks with marsh views, play the 18-hole disc golf course, climb the outdoor rock wall, or rent bikes, pedal boats, kayaks, or paddleboards to explore the lake and tidal creeks. Pack a meal for shaded picnic spots, sand volleyball, and horseshoe pits. In winter, come for the Holiday Festival of Lights with s’mores, Santa Village, and local artisan vendors.

Waterfront Park

Scenic riverside park featuring the iconic Pineapple Fountain, swings, and harbor views

Summarized by AI

At Waterfront Park you can walk shaded paths under oak trees, stretch out on the big lawns, or grab a bench or family-sized swing facing Charleston Harbor. Cool off in the splash fountains or wade at the iconic Pineapple Fountain, one of the city’s most photographed spots and a favorite play area for kids. Stroll the pier, watch for dolphins at sunset, and use the fountains, statues, and harbor views as an easy backdrop for photos and picnics.

Hampton Park

Summarized by AI

At Hampton Park you can walk shaded paths under huge oak trees draped in Spanish moss, circle the pond, and explore gardens with some of the most extensive floral displays in Charleston. Use the loop and inner paths for running, biking, blading, or the workout circuit, and let kids enjoy the playground or feeding ducks by the water. Rent a bike, follow the “Layers of the Landscape” audio walking tour, or spread a blanket for a picnic. Afterward, nearby spots like Huriyali, Lewis BBQ, and Edmunds Oast make it easy to grab food or coffee.

Rainbow Row

Iconic row of pastel-colored historic homes along East Bay Street, perfect for photos

Summarized by AI

At Rainbow Row you can walk along more than a dozen pastel-painted, 18th-century Georgian row houses, once used by merchants who ran their businesses downstairs and lived above. Study the colorful facades, wrought-iron details, and cobblestone street that once bordered the old seawall, and capture close-ups or panoramic photos of Charleston’s most photographed street. Then continue your stroll toward The Battery and Waterfront Park for harbor views, palm trees, and more historic architecture along the water.

All about Charleston

Charleston’s present is rooted in its past. In 1931, the city became the first to set an ordinance establishing a historic district. The result is an extremely well-preserved pre-Civil War downtown area, plus about 2,800 historic homes in the region showcasing eight architectural styles seen in the Lowcountry: Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Classical Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Victorian, and Art Deco. The quintessentially charming Southern seaport city is also within easy reach of diverse communities, including South Carolina’s largest island, Johns Island, about 10 miles to the southwest; the fast-growing suburb of Mount Pleasant, 10 miles to the northeast; the barrier island of Sullivan’s Island, 10 miles to the east; Folly Beach, best known for its pier, 11.5 miles to the south; the oceanfront community of Seabrook Island 23.7 miles southwest, and the delightful small town of Summerville, about 25 miles to the northwest.

What are the top things to do in Charleston?

Fort Sumter

The first shots of the Civil War rang out at this fort in 1861. It’s accessible only by ferry boat, departing from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in Charleston or Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

Historic District

The historic district sits on the peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet, and mixes cobblestone streets and lowcountry architecture. Stop at the Charleston City Market, one of the country’s oldest public markets, established in 1804, and also explore King Street, which runs from uptown to the Charleston Harbor, passing through the Design, Fashion, and Antique districts.

The Battery

On the southern end is this picturesque waterfront stretch of historic mansions, as well as Joe Riley Waterfront Park, home of the Pineapple Fountain.
