The Magic House floors are worn and full of stories, the paint is fresh, colorful and the furnishings are up-cycled and unique. Todji painted the outside of The Magic House and Magic Barn with seven colors over three summers, and has personally done the restoration work on this vintage home since 2000, while building a career as a fine art sculptor.

Todji produces bronze public art sculpture monuments for US cities and private collectors. Please enjoy the rotating sculpture collection. The sculptures travel to different exhibitions, so some of the sculptures in the photos may or may not be present during your stay, and other new ones may be in their place.

Hobie lives on site and is available to both respect privacy and also assist during your stay. He is a novelist and professional writer.

We support the local art community by giving work at the Magic House to community artists.

We operate with a short term rental permitted issued by the city of Portland. The city has conducted a safety inspection of the entire premises.

Guest access
The backyard is shared space with Magic Barn guests, your hosts, gardeners, maintenance people, etc. Please exchange friendly hellos, make friends, and also respect privacy.

Other things to note
The Magic House is on a fairly busy four lane street so our neighbors do not notice our guests coming and going. For this reason we consider our location to be five stars. (Neighbors were chronically disturbed by a nearby Airbnb which was on a quiet residential street, and has since closed). Our guests can feel 100% welcome knowing that they are not disturbing our neighbors, and locally owned businesses appreciate your patronage, just as we do.

We are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes audible street traffic. For sensitive sleepers we have one mustard colored bedroom on the backside of the house that is fairly well protected from sound from the street.

Proximity to the street has been an issue for some guests, and not for others. A previous guest at The Magic House wrote this in their review: "Description of the house warns about the sound of traffic from a busy street but we didn't notice. Neighborhood is safe and clean."

If you are booking for someone else, please inform us, and send us a photo of their ID through AIrbnb messages. Please note that you are responsible for any damages by your guests if we cannot easily collect from them on the day of their departure.

When backing out of the driveway please watch for pedestrians, bikes, the telephone pole on the left, and fast coming traffic. We recommend that you wait for the light down the street to change during busy times.

The Magic Barn is set back from the street, is super-duper insulated and has been described in past reviews as "tranquil", "quiet" and "serene".

This is a 1909 house that has been restored, however the floors are worn and full of stories, and the stairs can be a little creaky. The paint is fresh and colorful and the furnishings are up-cycled and unique.

We charge $30 per guest, per night, after the first four guests. We charge $30 per bed to make any additional beds above the guest count.

Airbnb changed their definition of "bed" to not count floor mattresses in the "bed count", so I have called our floor mattresses "beds" so that our potential guests can know how many sleeping options we offer.

We do not issue refunds that are outside of Airbnb's refund policies. If you want to change or cancel your reservation and Airbnb won't issue you a refund, then neither will we. Thank you for understanding that we cannot absorb financial losses on behalf of the changing plans of our guests, no matter whether the reason is authentic, or inauthentic.

The driveway is priority reserved for maintenance work when necessary.

We have a short term rental permit from the city of

Patronage from guests such as yourself is part of what helps Todji continue to work as an artist, and for this he is deeply grateful!

We hope to host you and your group, thank you!

Neighborhood highlights

We are located in one of the most beautiful, and hippest neighborhoods in Portland.

With the center of both SE Hawthorne and SE Division St within 3 blocks, there is an abundance of restaurants, grocery stores, neighborhood strolling, boutique browsing and hiking options within walking distance.

See a movie, or just step in to witness the beautiful and iconic McMenamin's Bagdad theater, accompanied by an incredible restaurant/bar/pool hall in the back called the "Back Stage Bar", at SE 37th and Hawthorne. It will give you a feel for classic Portland!

We are minutes from Mt Tabor park which has a lovely forest with walking trails sitting upon a dormant volcano, and we are 45 minutes to the spectacular 600 foot tall Multnomah waterfall in the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge scenic area.

Division is the new up and coming Southeast neighborhood. With lots of modern architecture, new restaurants and shops you will get a feel for the freshest vibe Portland has to offer.

Here is a list to get you started:

Restaurants:

(The options are endless but here are a few popular favorites!)

Serving Food Late - Sapphire Hotel at 50th and Hawthorne, Romantic and sexy atmosphere- great for late night drinks and gourmet bar food.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters- 45th and Division, Classic Great Portland Coffee

Trinket- One block away on Lincoln and 39th, great for Brunch with their locally sourced eggs!) Harlow- 36th and Hawthorne, Hip and Healthy, great for lunch, or fresh veggie juice.

Por Que No- 46th and Hawthorne, Wildly popular Mexican with a great playful decor. (Don’t be intimidated by the line, you order at the counter, and then get a seat and your order will be out in no time)

Bollywood Theater- 30th and Division, Indian food small plates. Also along line but worth it! Salt and Straw- 33rd and Division, Food Networks top five ice creams! Super Popular!

Lauretta Jeans- 34th and Division, Breathtaking Pies! Tidbit Food Cart Pod, 28th and Division, Fabulous food cart selection, lots of seating, including a beer garden and vintage clothing bus. A truly Portland experience.

Hiking: The website of "Friends of the Columbia Gorge" has detailed information about many hikes in the scenic and nearby Columbia River Gorge. It is a 45 minute drive from here to enter the gorge. Below are the names of hikes that we love and recommend. Check the website to find a hike with a distance and fitness level that suits you. For those who are visiting the gorge for the first time, I recommend visiting the most spectacular, and also the most touristicated, 600 foot Multnomah Falls. For those who want a challenging half day hike you can begin at Multnomah Falls and hike a loop called the Franklin Ridge Loop. Multnomah Falls /Franklin Ridge Loop Eagle Creek Angels Rest Bridal Veil Falls Triple Falls Wahkeena Falls
