Little Gem is a bright and cozy cottage at the intersection of the shore and a stream, with views of offshore islands at the mouth of Gouldsboro Bay. We offer a great base for your Downeast adventures like whale watches, puffin cruises, and kayak trips. Close to Schoodic Loop Road and 60 minutes from Bar Harbor. We offer a comprehensive digital welcome guide to connect you with the best food, adventures, hiking, swimming, and more. Find us on social media as "Maine Coastal Magic".

The space
Little Gem, our guests always say, is EXACTLY that. A simple but well-appointed dog-friendly cottage that has the most surprising and delightful views from almost anywhere you look. Our prior guests describe it better than we can - so have a look at our great reviews. This spot is a feast for your senses, from the deep blue water that sparkles like diamonds under sunny skies, to the intoxicating ocean breeze and the many sounds that come with sea birds. The sky and sea will not cease to amaze you as they put on a new show every single day. Unplug from the world while you recharge your batteries by the shore.

We provide a comfortable setting for one or two guests with two bedrooms (one queen and one twin), plus a small desk and great internet speeds for those that must work. The kitchen is well equipped for preparing food and there are many options to purchase local and fresh fish, meat and produce. No TV here but the entertainment is right outside your door…when the sun sets, stick around for the incredible show of purple, orange and red clouds followed by a million stars on a clear night. Step outside before turning in for the night and you may see the Milky Way rise on a moonless summer night.

Expect to drive a bit to explore the area but you’ll find an endless supply of lobster rolls, fish & chips, ice cream, antiques, countless places to hike, pick blueberries, or peruse many gift shops and galleries. If you prefer to stick around the quiet neighborhood, you could lounge on the porch, enjoy your games, puzzles and books, or walk down the dead end dirt road to find colorful fields, a mysterious old cemetery, and towering trees with nests for Eagles and Osprey. Head up the road a half mile to watch boats launch or bring your own kayak/SUP to get out on the typically calm Gouldsboro Bay. Nearby you can rent kayaks, bikes, or hire a Registered Maine Guide to take you into the depths of this beautiful and rugged landscape.

We are attentive hosts that genuinely want you to have the best possible experience, and we work hard to make our cottage welcoming, answer your questions, offer guidance, and share our love of the region with our custom welcome guide available to read on your smartphone or computer. Come find out why we get so many 5 star reviews and you'll soon see why it’s so hard to leave this piece of heaven!!

Guest access
Guests will have access to the main level of the cottage, yard, covered porch, and the sun deck. Access to the water is possible (high tide is easiest) from the rocky shoreline in our backyard, but shoes are recommended. The basement is not accessible to guests.

Other things to note
Sharing our home and our love of Maine is our passion! We love to know all of our guests by name (pets too!) and we welcome the chance to help you plan your perfect vacation. We ask all guests to treat our home with care and respect, as you might if you were staying with a good friend.

We welcome one dog per stay (at least one year old, less than 100 pounds) but will consider requests for two small dogs. All guests booking with a pet will receive a text message within 24 hours requesting completion of a form and acknowledgement of our pet rules. We do not charge a pet fee, but request your cooperation if any damages or excessive cleaning are incurred.

At least one past Airbnb stay with a positive rating is required, but send an inquiry if you don't have this and we will be happy to discuss whether our place is a good fit for your group.

We request and appreciate clear communication about your plans, your needs, and any issues that arise during your stay. This enables us to continue our track record of being awesome hosts!

Our home and property are not suitable for young children.

Our cottage is located in an area of the state that has minimal resources. You'll be 40 minutes away from a large town (Ellsworth) with restaurants and grocery stores, and 75 minutes away from the nearest city/airport (Bangor). There are a few grocery stores, coffee shops and restaurants closer to the cottage (we provide a list of these) but not a wide selection.

Neighborhood highlights

In this small community of local and seasonal residents, please respect speed limits and take the time to say hi to neighbors - you just might learn about the best blueberry patch or spot to view eagles!

You'll find unlimited options for hiking, biking, paddling, walking, and sightseeing all over Downeast Maine. The nearest trailhead is 10 minutes away - we provide an extensive list of options. Travel less than 25 minutes to visit the Schoodic Peninsula - the less popular but equally beautiful side of Acadia National Park where you can hike, bike, picnic, or just watch waves crash on the rocks. One hour's drive west will get you to the more popular side of Acadia in Bar Harbor. Drive 90 minutes east to reach the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec. If you bring a passport, a jaunt over the border to Campobello Island in New Brunswick Canada makes a great day trip.

Hosting came as a surprise second career that I absolutely love, and it has given me a new appreciation for the folks that have hosted me and my husband Russ in our travels. We love to explore places off the beaten path, and we help our guests to do the same. Russ and I own and operate our rental properties, do our own cleaning and most of the maintenance - a full time job! For our guests, we provide an extensive digital guidebook, plus maps and books to help you plan adventures. See you soon!
