About this space
Welcome to our island home — a place guests often describe as magical. This 120-year-old house has hosted generations of celebrations, from weddings to anniversaries to spontaneous family getaways. It’s full of character, warmth, and stories — the kind of place where memories are made.
Because of its age and the love it’s received over the years, the home carries the gentle marks of time — creaky floors, scuffed steps, and other small imperfections that come with history. While we work hard to keep the space clean, comfortable, and well cared for, it’s not a brand-new or “pristine” environment — and we don’t try to make it one.
If you're looking for sleek, spotless perfection, this may not be the best fit — and that’s okay! But if you're drawn to charm, comfort, and an authentic island experience, we think you’ll feel right at home here.
When it comes time to rate your stay, we hope you’ll keep that in mind. Just as we graciously overlook the little things that come with joyful, well-used spaces — like sandy footprints or a dinged suitcase — we ask for the same understanding in return.
🛑 Please note: The owner’s quarters are located behind the inn and above the garage. These are private spaces and will remain locked and clearly marked during your stay.
This island was recently featured on Chronicle, and we were honored to be visited by a world-renowned travel journalist who will include Chestnut Hill Inn in an upcoming book!
We hope you enjoy your stay and make beautiful memories in this truly special spot. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions at all!
Warmly,
Billy & Emmalie Arvidson

Other things to note
🏝 Getting Around the Island
People use all kinds of transportation on the island—here are the most popular options:
Golf Carts – A fun way to explore! Per Maine law, you must have a valid driver’s license to operate one. You can reserve rentals through Long Island Golf Carts (highly recommended!).
Bikes – Bring your own on the ferry, or feel free to borrow a couple of our “beater bikes” from the shed.
Walking – We’re located just a short stroll from the main beaches, the Bakehouse, and the Boathouse. The Pier is about a 15-minute walk.
Personal Vehicles – Casco Bay Lines offers car transport. Check their site for more details.
📶 Cell & Internet Service
Cell service can be spotty in some spots, but we now have high-speed Wi-Fi! The password is posted inside the Inn. Need a boost? The library around the corner tends to have excellent service.
🦞 Lobsters
Long Island is home to some of the best lobsters in the world! We recommend Fern Lobster Park, just nearby—she prefers a heads-up before pickup.
🐚 Transfer station tip: “Lobster and crab shells go overboard—it’s where they came from!” We’ll have a compost bucket available for scraps and leftovers.
🧺 Utilities & Comfort
Washer/Dryer available – please bring your own detergent.
Dishwasher – load and run any dirty dishes before checkout.
Baseboard heat for cooler nights – please turn it off when not in use.
Pellet stove in the living room – bring pellets if you’d like to use it.
No A/C – but the Inn sits high on a hill and was designed to catch amazing cross breezes. Most rooms also have ceiling fans.
🚿 Water & Septic
Island living is a little different! The house uses a well and septic system, so please:
Flush only toilet paper
Be mindful of water usage (especially during busy weekends!)
The tap water is safe to drink and brush teeth with, but you’re welcome to bring filtered water if you prefer.
🛖 Shed Access
The shed is full of helpful extras—beach chairs, sunshades, toys, bikes, and firewood. Feel free to use anything you like, but please return items neatly for the next guests.
🗑 Trash & Recycling
Long Island recycles—it helps keep the island beautiful and costs down.
You’ll find three barrels for:
Trash
Cardboard
Recyclables (cans, plastic bottles, etc.)
🦞 A compost bin will also be provided for food scraps and seafood shells.
🔥 Grill & Propane
There’s a gas grill on the kitchen deck. The tank should be full—if it runs out during your stay, just let us know so we can have it replaced for the next guests.
🛏 Towels & Bedding
Each bedroom includes:
Fresh bedding
A set of bath towels and face cloths
🚫 Please do not take house towels to the beach. We’ve placed 5–6 beach towels in the laundry room cabinet for your use.
