Neighborhood highlights

Barrio de San Sebastián

One of the historic neighborhoods of the city of Merida, Yucatan, cradle of the panucho according to some neighbors, home of the emblematic Hermitage of Santa Isabel and an excellent place to know what were formerly the limits of the city, which in the year 1690 were intended to delimit with a project very similar to that of the city of Campeche, this never proceeded; however the 3 Arches had already been built, being the largest of the 3, the "Arco de San Juan" that is located on 69 street with 69 A of the center, in front of the park and the church of San Juan, a few minutes from the Hermitage of Santa Isabel.

La Ermita de Santa Isabel

It was built in the 16th century by a neighbor of the area called Gaspar González de Ledesma, who intended to live as a hermit and at his death, passed into the hands of the Archdiocese of Yucatan.

The hermitages were temples that were built on the outskirts of the communities for the hermits to live their choice of life away from the world and its complications, there was the conviction that life departs was a more protected way to achieve life. The hermitage was built outside of the city and as the gates of the city were closed, in the surroundings of the temple there were carriages and travelers who could not enter the city. The importance of the entire area was very significant as it is necessary to take into consideration that the main port of the Province of Yucatan was Campeche and the so-called Camino Real was very busy.
