Summers in the region are searingly hot — the hottest temperatures on earth have been recorded in the Mojave Desert — and conditions are characteristically arid, making many of the area’s outdoor attractions uncomfortable for many. The winters and shoulder seasons tend to be cooler, and rain is always a rare event. Towering red cliffs, winding canyons, and waterfalls and beaches make this a pleasant place to escape the desert heat.

Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness

Boasting some of the most stunning desert scenery in all of Southern California, this wilderness area begins just outside of town and provides access to a host of outdoor activities. You can hike and horseback ride through rugged countryside dotted with agave and ocotillo, climb the stark granite ranges, and take a cooling dip in the Colorado River.

Mitchell Caverns

Located an hour west of town in the middle of the Mojave National Preserve, the Mitchell Caverns are a collection of caves underneath the Providence Mountains. These striking limestone formations create an alien landscape for exploration, with maintained walking trails passing underneath dripping stalactites and between impressive stalagmites.
