Modern Japanese Farmhouse Experience

AdamRating, 5 stars3 months ago
A rural retreat, off the tourist path, but easily accessible by train from Tokyo. We were keen for some rural Japan after quite a few stops in urban centres. The house is in a quiet, unspoilt setting. You can do short walks from the house that can include views of Mount Fuji down the valley. There's other places you can pop into too, such as the Owl Cafe or the wonderful deli/shop at the petrol station up the road. The house itself has kept its rustic and traditional appearance and features, while also having very functional equipment, from Wifi to everything you'd need for cooking. Some great places to read and relax in, from the garden to by the wood burner. We did not have car which was fine - it's just 6 minutes by taxi from the station, but a car would allow you to explore further afield. Ryo the host was very helpful with answering questions rapidly and clearly. I would highly recommend!

Lovely ryokan with spectacular views at the base of Mt. Myoko. Very peaceful and relaxing stay. Friendly, helpful staff. Woke up to the sun rising over the mountains Quick train and bus ride to Tsubame onsen and the Mt. Myoko trail, plenty of ski areas around. Great place to stay if you're looking to Ski and/or hike around Mt. Myoko.

Japanese traditional house

TheoRating, 5 stars4 months ago
Miwa's place is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Japan's megacities. The house and neighborhood genuinely make you slow down and relax as you enjoy the slower pace of the countryside. Miwa and her mother were responsive and incredibly helpful. They prepared a book for you detailing nearby recommendations on things to do and places to eat. The house is comfortable and the amenities are generous. I highly recommend staying here if you would like to slow down a little bit and relax. Miwa's house is also conveniently located near some of the post towns of the Nakasendo trail like Magomejuku and Tsumagojuku.
A spacious room with a traditional tatami mat floor features sliding shoji doors leading to an outdoor area. Natural wood paneling adorns the ceiling and walls, while a softly glowing ceiling light complements the warm tones of the room.

Kashiwaya Ryokan Kaede

AlexanderRating, 5 stars17 months ago
Quiet and peaceful location that’s close to Nakagomi station, the convenience store, and many small local shops. The family living there is quick to help if you need it. If you’re looking for a place to crash at night and cook in the morning and don’t mind the faint smell of tobacco smoke, would recommend in a heartbeat.
The exterior of Kazeya 2 is shown, featuring traditional Japanese architecture. Sliding wooden doors are prominent, flanked by paper lanterns that softly illuminate the entrance. A warm, inviting atmosphere is created by the subtle lighting against the wooden structure.

Kazeya Group1 Private Onsen & Quiet Hotel "Kazeya"

RyotaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
There were many dishes for dinner and breakfast, and all of them were very delicious. In addition to a clean and atmospheric bath with an open-air bath, there was also a free and private bath that can be used without reservation, which was also pleasant. The bedding is a thick mattress on top of the tatami mats, and it is comfortable. In the morning, when I asked for hot water to be taken to the snowy mountain, they happily filled it in the water bottle, which was very helpful. I want to use it again.

Yanagiya at castle town:private room A, 6 tatami

ElliottRating, 5 stars3 months ago
Guesthouse Yanagiya and the surrounding village is even more charming than the photos can express. Yukie is a very caring host, and she has created a space that invites its guests to interact in a comfortable setting. Rooms are simple, yet clean. The location is great for a relaxing getaway, and is about 1-1.5 hours ride via train to the Magome/Tsumago Nakasendo trail. While that trail is indeed worth the effort to travel to, Iwamura and the castle ruins are very beautiful, quaint, and way less busy than the Nakasendo trail. In the future, I would love to return!

Double bed room(Single use) with shared facilities

BritniRating, 5 stars1 month ago
I stayed here for 7 nights for and it was a very special white Christmas! Seongmi and Yoshi are really nice hosts, and made sure I was comfortable. It was so nice getting to know them and having breakfast every morning with other guests, who were also really nice. Seongmi cooked us all a delicious Korean pancake dinner and Yoshi served on Christmas. Amazing experience. The room and over all house was super cozy. I enjoyed reading and writing in the office room space. My room had shared a bathroom and shower, but no one ever used it the same time as I did so it was as if I had it to myself. It was perfect amount of privacy but also social getting to know other lovely guests there. They have connections with onsens nearby which I highly recommend. The hosts were also very helpful with arranging my heavy luggage to be delivered to my next location so I didn’t have to worry about it traveling to my next destination. It really felt like home and I will be back!

Amazing place to stay. The rooms are warm and cozy, with windows that let in sun and can be opened on warm days. The onsen was very relaxing and clean. Hosts were amazingly welcoming and helpful. Really felt taken care of and they looked out for us. Not too many things to do directly around the ryokan, however that was perfectly fine for us and we spent most of our time comfortably in our room
