The Draper is a love story. A love for architecture, a love for functional design and a love for all things mid century modern. It’s a time capsule containing all the hope and wonder of the design revolution of the mid century movement, providing a rare respite from the demands of modern living but with the comforts we now expect. This 1957 California Dream Home exudes romance, nostalgia and playfulness. The inside/outside design honors California, 5 minutes from the DSM airport & downtown DSM.

The space
We bought this California Dream Ranch to preserve its MCM original features and renovate in period form as we go. Inspired by the story and era of Mad Men, we set out to leave Easter eggs for lovers of the show and era throughout.

We love that there are so many different experiences in the home.

Each bedroom offers a unique experience from calming to adventurous to romantic. Yes, that is a round bed. The bathrooms are period pieces themselves, updated with modern comforts.

The great room is spacious and has breathtaking views through the glass wall of the peaceful backyard. The ballroom custom concrete floor is perfect for a romantic spin with your love or showing off your 50’s dance moves with friends. A nook for cocktails and cards is sure to have you feeling like your own Rat Pack.

The kitchen offers a period cooktop with built in griddle, lots of counter space and sight lines into the fondue room, our name for the dining room/den. We have left the original chimney flue as a delightful MCM design focal point. We do have a fondue set but no grilling, it is for beauty.

The laundry room/office space offers a flex 4th sleeping space or a separate relaxation/work space.

Bring a yoga mat or use one of ours if meditation and peace are on the agenda. This is the Draper after all, and in the spirit of the full arc of Donald Draper, we offer you a yoga retreat in the backyard. Practice on our outdoor yoga/meditation platform or inside our great room when weather doesn’t allow.

If the inspiration of the inside isn’t all you need, the backyard is true oasis. Spend the day experiencing how home design was meant to be by truly experiencing how outdoor meets indoor coalesce. A private hideaway perfect for savoring your morning coffee on the patio while enjoying stunning views of the interior of the home through the glass encasement. Take in the sunshine while doing your morning yoga on the platform under the sweeping trees. Entertain your family while barbecuing outside directly off of the dining room and kitchen. In the evening, laugh with your friends on the patio around the fire pit while taking in the breathtaking lighting and dramatic angles of the inside of the home.

This home is our love story as well. It’s our forever home and we have loved this home back into truly living. We have preserved, rebuilt and transformed this home and want to share that love with you. And we are just getting started, we have so many plans for Season 2 at the Draper.
