Slow down and relax at this romantic rural retreat on the edge of Constable country.

The Hay Barn, with its wonky beams and wood-burning stove, sits peacefully among acres of rolling farmland, moments from some of Suffolk’s most iconic sights, including Sutton Hoo - featured on Netflix’s The Dig.

Wake to the splashing of wild mallards on the pond, pick juicy plums from the orchard, and set off on an adventure across the fields. Perfect for walking, cycling, exploring or simply hiding away.

The space
The Hay Barn is attached to our home at Hall Farm Cottage, but it’s secluded and self-contained with its own entrance off the driveway. There’s one large double bedroom (we can provide a travel cot on request). The Hay Barn consists of:

•Living room – Vast living space with picture window, wood-burning stove, dining area, games chest, Bluetooth speaker, piano, and internet TV with Netflix/Amazon Prime
•Double bedroom - Exposed beams, built-in wardrobes and super-king sized bed with Hungarian goose feather and down duvet and Egyptian cotton bed linen
•Bathroom – Built in bath, walk-in shower and underfloor heating. Towels provided
•Small Kitchen – Gas oven and hob, fridge, microwave and all the pots and pans you’ll need
•Outside space - Private patio with table, chairs and charcoal BBQ. The rest of the two acres is shared with us, but you are welcome to wander around the orchard and pond.

**Check out our other listing for luxury pop-up glamping, available in July and August**

Practicalities
The Hay Barn at Hall Farm Cottage is an hour and a half drive from London. Alternatively, trains to Ipswich (15 min taxi away) take just over an hour from London Liverpool Street station.

The location is fairly remote, and the nearest shop is 10 minutes drive away, but you can order a Tesco delivery online.

Guest access
The barn is self-contained, with its own entrance. Parking is secure, behind gates. The barn is on one floor, but there are steps up to the front door and down into the bedroom.

Other things to note
There are two pubs within walking distance (The Brook Inn, Washbrook, and the George, Hintlesham).

Please note there is a large pond in the grounds. Small children are welcome but please keep an eye on them at all times!

Iconic Suffolk sights nearby
Halfway between historic Hadleigh and the county town of Ipswich, the Hay Barn is perfectly positioned to explore Constable Country. Flatford Mill and the picturesque riverside scenes that inspired numerous paintings, including the Hay Wain, are just a 10 minute drive away through the Vale of Dedham – a designated Area of Natural Beauty that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Also within easy reach are the drunken half-timbered houses of Lavenham (including the 14th-century cottage that featured as Harry Potter’s birthplace in the films); the ancient wool town of Long Melford, with its Tudor Mansions; and the Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo.

Closer to home, historic Hadleigh is the nearest town (10 min drive) with its medieval Guildhall, independent shops, river walk and excellent pubs and restaurants. And from the Hay Barn’s front door, countless footpaths crisscross the surrounding countryside. We can provide maps of wonderful local walks. Hintlesham, with its pub and manor house hotel offering afternoon teas and spa treatments, is just a 10 minute stroll across the fields.

My husband and I escaped the London grind for the serenity of Suffolk in 2018. We've been making chutney and jam, and learning to grow all kinds of things ever since, including our young boys.
