You’ll be steps from some of the city’s most exciting culinary and cultural gems, including the Michelin-rated Street to Kitchen, home of Texas’s James Beard Best Chef, just across the street.

The space
Your room is the “Fiesta Room,” a cozy (120 sq ft) private bedroom with a locally crafted bed and a playful installation by local artist Melissa Eason, inspired by Texas’ iconic Fiesta supermarkets and Mexican-American culture. The Fiesta Room shares a bathroom just across the hall with the Tilly Room.
Note that the Fiesta Room is right off the soaring main living room—great for guests who want to be close to the action, but not ideal for light sleepers, as it can get lively in the evenings.
The shared living and dining area offers a large flatscreen TV, a sofa, a breakfast bar, a long dining table, and a welcoming vibe where guests often hang out, share drinks, and swap stories. The kitchen is fully equipped, and you’re also welcome to use the pizza oven, BBQ grill, and picnic tables in the shared outdoor deck and garden—often the social heart of the whole property. The Plant House tends to attract creative, curious, and open-minded travelers, so if you’re feeling social, you’ll likely make a new friend or two.
The Plant House is steps away from Neighbors Pizza Bar, a cozy neighborhood hang and live music spot, as well as Eight Row Flint, Voodoo Queen, Moon Tower Inn, Equal Parts Brewery, and other great dining and drinking options. Around the corner you’ll find new-wave coffee shops, cool vintage boutiques, and a community of artists and makers that make this area feel like Houston’s own little Austin.
Your home at the Plant House is well located for everything in central Houston, one block from the Coffee Plant light rail stop, connected to downtown via a 7-minute ride – and less than 10 minutes to the George R. Brown Convention Center, Astros’ ballpark, and Dynamo soccer stadium. It's also a 10-minute walk to the Harrisburg Hike & Bike trail.

The Plant House is easy to find. Free open parking on all the surrounding streets. The Coffee Plant light rail stop is one block away. Restaurants, late-night bars, a wonderful plant-lined coffeeshop, a vintage clothing shop, and a barber shop are all within one block, and some of Houston's most famous Mexican restaurants and hipster bars are all an easy walk away -- the neighborhood is so walkable that the owners don’t own cars, and more of our guests arrive by public transportation or Uber than in cars.
Other things to note
The Plant House is an environment with lots of shared outdoor spaces. We're friendly with everyone who lives on the block. We love our neighbors, and they sometimes come hang out in our hammock garden, walk their dogs by, or bring over some beers. The walls in the 1890s houses also aren't soundproof. So we're not a good fit for guests who want total privacy, silence, or isolation from strangers. We're an ideal spot for friendly people who like to say hi. Smoking is allowed outdoors only, and we ask that you keep down the noise level after 10pm.

Neighborhood highlights
Located about a block from the Harrisburg/Coffee Plant rail stop and 7 minutes by light rail from downtown, the Convention Center, and Minute Maid Park, the Plant House is in the middle of a rapidly evolving neighborhood that's quickly become Houston's hottest area for creative young people, a walking neighborhood with late-night food and drinks just steps away.
Our part of the East End is characterized by hyper-local businesses run by people who also live in the neighborhood. This area boasts a fascinating blend of traditional turn-of-the century bungalows, shot-gun homes, and industrial buildings turned into startup projects.
This was once a first generation, working-class neighborhood of immigrants. The homes being restored are nestled among established trees, and there is less displacement than in other developing areas in town, largely because the old industrial buildings are being redeveloped into residential spaces, expanding the total number of residents that can be accommodated in the neighborhood.
The Plant House is a few light rail stops away from the Convention Center, Discovery Green Park, and the core of downtown (about a five-minute rail ride); and within walking distance of bars and a recently opened craft brewery (Equal Parts on Harrisburg Boulevard). Eight Row Flint on Harrisburg, two blocks away, serves great food and craft cocktails late into the night.
If you want a hip Third Wave coffee experience, Eden, on Harrisburg is a two-minute walk. It doubles as a plant shop, and you’ll sip your brew under a leafy canopy of carefully curated plants that you can take home. A half a block away, Champ Burger makes some of Houston’s best burgers and an indulgent deep-fried steak sandwich. The hottest nightlife district in the city is also in the East End area, about a mile away on the edge of Downtown.
Fajitas on sizzle platters, an all-time Tex-Mex standard, were first born in our neighborhood, created by Ninfa Laurenzo, on Navigation Boulevard. There’s an abundance of local spots for tacos and Tex-Mex, including a great taco truck across the street from the Plant House, El Charro a few blocks away, and best of all, El Tiempo Cantina and Ninfa's (both on Navigation). On Sundays, you can walk or bike to the Sunday Farmer's Market on the Navigation esplanade.
For bicycle enthusiasts, the Plant neighborhood has the reputation of being the most bike friendly neighborhood in town. Less than a mile down the road (Sampson Street) is access to the Buffalo Bayou, Houston's largest linear park with a series of hike and bike trails, in addition to the Columbia Tap trail, and roads that aren't clogged with traffic. In fact, the mastermind of our Fire Station block (and next-door neighbor to The Plant House) is known as Houston's #1 bike advocate. He was the guy behind the Bayou Greenway’s initiative to make Houston the most bikeable urban city and chose to move into this neighborhood because of the connectivity to bike trails, and he rides his bike to his office downtown every day.

I'm Robin, co-owner (with Jeff) of the Plant House. We come from the worlds of community development and food/travel publishing, and we both love to travel and stay in Airbnb's. When the opportunity came along to restore these two bungalows from the late 1800s, we knew it was time to go into business together and turn these buildings filled with amazing history into the Airbnb of our dreams.
