The space
The Plant House, two blocks from the Coffee Plant light rail stop in Houston’s artsy East End, is a new kind of boutique garden hotel, born out of the imaginations of two longtime friends: Jeff Kaplan, co-creator of the Axelrad Beer Garden, and Robin Goldstein, co-creator of the Fearless Critic Houston Restaurant Guide. The Plant House is the realization of Jeff’s and Robin’s dream of what the ideal Airbnb guest house should feel like.

The Plant House team also includes Melissa Eason, one of Houston’s most beloved young muralists, public artists, and signmakers; Marco Sanchez, host, resident musician, and director of the coffee program; Brooklyn architect Ben Rosenblum, who restored Ithaca’s lovely Argos Inn; and Brazilian furniture designer Cristina Murusiak, who is responsible for many of the one-of-a-kind pieces inside the Plant House. The vision of the team as a whole was to create the guest house that they would most want to stay in themselves.
The first thing you’ll probably notice after walking through the gates and into the garden is the colorful civilization of hammocks in the shade of a big old oak tree. The Axelrad influence is immediately clear from the trademark Axelrad free-rotating hanging air seats, wonders of comfort that can swivel away for privacy or swivel back to socialize with other hammockers.
Inside the two Victorian houses, which Jeff and Robin spent most of their life savings on restoring and reconstructing, is a seven-room craft guest house decorated by some of Houston’s most talented young artists and furniture workers. Every item of furniture in the Plant House was either built or restored in the East End of Houston. The stairway and cabinetry in the Plant House was built by HTX Made, in the Coffee. Its seven rooms have boutique hotel amenities and locally made Bungaloom non-toxic organic plant-based mattresses made in the neighborhood and designed to sleep cool.
The project began when Anne Whitlock, a community organizer and her husband, Michael Skelly, a local wind-power entrepreneur, saved six white 1890s bungalows from destruction in the nearby blocks of the Coffee Plant neighborhood. They hired John Cherry, Houston’s most legendary home mover, to pick up the old homes and move them all onto one block, where Skelly and his wife, who had met in the Peace Corps, had bought an old firehouse to move into and some land around it for the bungalows. They wanted to create an experimental neighborhood that felt more like 1890s Houston than today’s city, with low, friendly fences and shared outdoor green spaces. The Plant House is actually two houses of the six in the community. The other neighbors are young Houston artists, builders, and community organizers.
After years in reconstruction, the Plant House—the first guest house in the heart of the Coffee Plant neighborhood—is finally ready to welcome our intrepid first few guests at a steeply discounted price that reflects the fact that we are still working out many kinks. We would like our guests during this first phase to consider themselves beta testers.
We call the two houses the “Loud House” and the “Soft House.” The soothing Soft House, portions of which preserve the house’s old yellow and robin’s-egg blue paint, has three rooms, all with private bathrooms. The Cherry Room is a cozy single room named for Houston legend Keith Cherry. Houston is a city of booms and busts, and there's lots of movement in between our development cycles. And Keith Cherry has made a living out of it. Moving homes in Houston is a "thing,' and no one has moved more homes than Cherry. Our project was the largest single move he's ever done. When our block was formed, we all watched the six homes on our block get picked up and moved right before they were to be demolished to make room for townhomes. It was a house moving parade. We are honoring Cherry, and all of the Houston architecture this man has preserved, with a room named after him. The Cherry Room has a comfy single couch/bed and its own private bathroom.
The Soft House has a shared eat-in kitchen, and Soft House guests also share a quiet private porch looking onto Salmpson St., the firehouse, and sweeping views of downtown Houston, which is less than 10 minutes away, door-to-door, by light rail.
The Loud House has four rooms, two larger rooms with private bathrooms and two smaller rooms with a shared bathroom. Even when it is running seamlessly, the Loud House will not be a place for light sleepers. Its soaring living room has a surround-sound movie theater. It is the place where guests are free to hang out, eat, drink, and meet each other in the evenings. All day long it is a musical place, a place for people who want to be in the middle of the action.
The two houses share the hammock garden, gas grill, picnic tables, lawn, and a big deck between the two houses that is really the heart of the whole experience.

Guest access
The Plant House is easy to find. Free open parking on all the surrounding streets. The Coffee Plant light rail stop is one block away. Two great restaurants, late-night bars, and a vintage clothing shop are all within one block, and some of Houston's most famous Mexican restaurants and hipster bars are all an easy walk away -- the neighborhood is so walkable that we rarely drive.
During your stay
Robin and Jeff, co-owners of The Plant House, both live on the block and one or both of them are often nearby. We love meeting our guests, but we'll give you as much space as you need -- feel free to choose contactless check-in if you prefer. The living room, kitchen, and upstairs nook are shared with the 3 other guest rooms in the Big House. Outdoor areas are shared with other Plant House guests and a few trusted neighbors. Robin is always available by text or phone to fix problems, answer questions, provide local tips, and ensure that your needs are met during your stay at the guest house.
Other things to note
The Plant House is an environment with lots of shared outdoor spaces. We're friendly with everyone who lives on the whole block. We love our neighbors, and they sometimes come hang out in our hammock garden, walk their dogs by, or bring over some beers. The walls in the 1890s houses also aren't soundproof. So we're not a good fit for guests who want total privacy, silence, or isolation from strangers. We're an ideal spot for friendly people who like to say hi. We ask that you only smoke outdoors, and that you keep down the noise level outdoors after 10pm.

Neighborhood highlights
Located about a block from the Harrisburg/Coffee Plant rail stop, The Plant House is in the middle of a rapidly evolving neighborhood with a different sort of urban revitalization—one that is driven by community wealth building and hyper-local businesses run by people who also live in the neighborhood. Unlike other neighborhoods being revitalized, this area boasts a fascinating blend of traditional turn of the century bungalows, shot-gun homes, and industrial buildings.
This was a first generation, working-class neighborhood of immigrants. The homes being restored are nestled among established trees, and there is less displacement than in other developing areas in town, largely because the old industrial buildings are being redeveloped into residential spaces, expanding the total number of residents that can be accommodated in the neighborhood.
The Plant House is a few light rail stops away from the Convention Center, Discovery Green Park, and the core of downtown (about a five-minute rail ride); and within walking distance of bars and a recently opened craft Brewery (on Harrisburg Boulevard). A new upscale bar is slated to open directly across the street in late summer of 2019, in a repurposed industrial building that will soon become home to other businesses, including a shop run by an artisan crafter who lives in the community. One block away is TXRX, one of the largest maker spaces in the country.
If you want a hip Third Wave coffee experience, Giant Leap Coffee is a five minute walk; but we recommend breakfast tacos and the perfectly decent coffee a half a block away at Champ Burger. The hottest up and coming night district is also in the East End area, about a mile away on the edge of Downtown.
The fajita was popularized in our neighborhood by Ninfa Lorenzo, on Navigation Boulevard, and there is an abundance of local spots for tacos and TexMex, including El Charro a few blocks away, Ninfa's (also on Navigation), and El Tiempo. On Sundays, you can walk or bike to the Sunday Farmer's Market on the Navigation esplanade.

He chose to move into this neighborhood because of the connectivity to bike trails, and he rides his bike to his office downtown every day.

I'm Robin, co-owner (with Jeff) of the Plant House. We come from the worlds of community development and food/travel publishing, and we both love to travel and stay in Airbnb's. When the opportunity came along to restore these two bungalows from the late 1800s, we knew it was time to go into business together and turn these buildings filled with amazing history into the Airbnb of our dreams.
