Beach

Neighborhood highlights

Fifth Street is a great location: Catch an amazing sunrise on one end of the street and an amazing sunset on the other end. The Fifth Street Beach entrance is only 0.3 miles away, a 7-minute walk on sidewalks or a 2-minute drive. There’s free parking at the beach. On some Saturdays, you can take a yoga class on the beach. It’s half a mile to the end of 5th Street, where you can catch the sunset or pick up the multi-use path, where you can walk or bike along Bay Drive, with views of Kitty Hawk Bay. Take it south to the Wright Brothers Memorial or north to the town of Kitty Hawk. You can catch the sunset at many stops along Bay Drive, including the Wright Shores exclusive spot on Bay Drive or the Avalon Boat Ramp, each only 0.7 miles away.

You may have heard that you should never cross the main road in OBX unless you’re at a crosswalk. Lucky for you, Fifth Street has a traffic light and crosswalk, making it easy to cross to access the beach and easy for driving. The sidewalk to the beach begins across the street from our house.

The home is within one mile of lots of amenities—restaurants, grocery stores, and lots of fun (if you can tear yourself away from the beach):

Avalon Pier: great for fishing. Don’t have a pole? Rent one and buy bait there.

Lost Treasure Golf: open daily from March 1 to Thanksgiving weekend, features two 18-hole miniature golf courses.

Two Parks: Meekins Athletic Field and Playground, featuring tennis courts and swings, and Hayman Park, featuring picnic tables, swings, playground equipment, and an open field; a great place for games, dog walks, or picnics.

R/C Kill Devil Hills 10-screen movie theater (in case of a rainy day)

Restaurants: Grab a cup of coffee at Front Porch Cafe or Starbucks or Wawa, a donut at Duck Donuts, or a meal at Jolly Roger Restaurant & Pirate Bar, Awful Arthurs Oyster Bar, Goombays Grille & Raw Bar, Beachside Bistro, NY Bagels, or Max’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria.

Pick up groceries at Target, which is a 2-minute walk, or at Publix or Food Lion, which is open 24 hours a day. Also check out these locally-owned businesses: OBX Winery, Kill Devil Hills' only winery; Chip’s Wine & Beer Market, which also has gourmet chocolate; and Outer Banks Olive Oil Company, where you can sample many flavors of olive oil and vinegar.

All of that and more are within less than one mile. All of them have parking and most are walkable.

Hopefully, you’ll never have to call them, but we’re also within one mile of emergency services--so close that recently a neighbor had a medical emergency and help arrived less than a minute after calling 911. We’re also about 7 minutes from Urgent Care and 13 minutes from Outer Banks Hospital.

The town of Kill Devil Hills is centrally located; it’s a short drive to Jockey’s Ridge, Nags Head Woods, Kitty Hawk Woods, and many parks, shops, restaurants, and breweries such as Swella's Brewing and Outer Banks Brewing Station. It’s easy to take a day trip to Corolla or Hatteras Island. The house is less than a mile and a half from the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which is part of the US National Park Service, commemorating where the Wright Brothers changed the world forever by flying for the first time.
