Monastery Cottage is a unique Georgian home attached to the beautiful 14th century Austin Friar's Monastery in the heart of the ancient town of Rye. The cottage is cosy, romantic, and ideally located, with easy access by foot to numerous cafes, shops and restaurants.

The space
The cottage is beautifully styled and decorated by Alex MacArthur Interiors. The ground floor consists of a cosy living room with sofa, two arm chairs, television set and reading material and a fully equiped kitchen with Rangemaster oven and Mauviel cookware; the kitchen leads to your own private outdoor dining/sitting area fenced off from the main garden, this lovely nook of the garden which is perfect for breakfast in the sunshine is hit by sunlight in the afternoon as well. Upstairs, a bedroom and large bathroom extend into the roof; both with views to the Monastery and its large Italian style garden. The bathroom is spacious with a brass, free-standing bath which fits two, a 19th century Italian marble sink, brass Thomas Crapper toilet fittings and with local natural hypoallergenic products.

The intimate character of the cottage, which is like a little gem, together with the ancient and idyllic neighbourhood setting makes Monastery Cottage the perfect romantic getaway.

Neighborhood highlights

Rye is a medieval citadel situated on the south-east coast of England. One of the two 'ancient' cinque port towns (the other being Winchelsea), Rye retains a quaint historic charm with cobbled streets and medieval architecture.

A marriage of town and countryside, Rye is surrounded by nature. A short bus ride takes you to the Rye Harbour nature reserve which, with its recently renovated Discovery Centre and hides, provides the ideal location to watch the coastal birds. Alternatively, hop on a different bus or take the 3 mile hike to the sprawling dunes of Camber Sands and spend a day relaxing on the beach or taking a dip in the sea.

Enjoy a delicious pub lunch at the Standard or the Globe Inn Marsh after climbing the bell tower at the 12th century St Mary's church; from here the views stretch all the way to Dungeoness! Behind the church sits Rye Castle's Ypres Tower; here you can explore the dungeon museum before looking through the telescope at the gun garden.

After lunch why not take a stroll down the High Street for some window shopping. Browse the myriad art galleries and trinket stores and keep your energy up with a delicious chocolate milkshake from the famous Knoops. For a truly unique experience, head to the main space of the Monastery where by appointment (or by chance!) you can see the beautiful 14th century converted chapel and the exciting collection of antiques it houses.

Enjoy dinner at the luxurious George hotel or a gourmet seafood meal at Webbe's before trying a local craft beer at the friendly and eclectic Waterworks pub. End the night at the Grapevine wine bar where you will find a moody atmosphere, a great wine and cocktail selection and regular live music - it also has the advantage of being just one building away from the Monastery, so you wont have to walk far to get home!
