The space
MAD ABOUT COCO & VARKALA CLIFF
Mad about Coco is a cosy and chilled Beach Resort with it’s own Restaurant on a huge property in the middle of Varkala’s Northcliff.
Even though you’ll find us in the middle of the cliff, Mad about Coco is a quiet and peaceful oasis in the second row where you can relax and have a break from the sun and the hustle and bustle from the cliff, where you will find a number of restaurants with sea view and all kinds of shops at your doorstep. It takes only a minute to walk to the cliff and three minutes down the staircases to the main beach.
OUR ROOMS & AMENITIES:
We are offering 15 rooms of different standards in several houses. All rooms have a balcony or a patio/ terrace with a private sitting area to relax, all rooms are equipped with ceiling fans and have their private bathrooms with shower, some with hot water, some equipped with AirCon.
*Please note that our rooms have no sea view. Please enjoy the view from our restaurant at the cliff.*
10 rooms are in our main building featuring private balconies or a patio/ terrace and private bathrooms with shower. Hot water is available from solar panel. The rooms are all equipped with fans. 3 of these double rooms are equipped with AirCon.
Furthermore we offer two Triple rooms with AirCon in a bungalow, each equipped with one double and one single bed, ceiling fans and private bathroom with geyser. These rooms are on ground floor and come with a terrace.
In a smaller quite old charming house we offer 3 small Budget rooms with ceiling fan only, they are equipped with queen beds and small private bathrooms with shower but without hot water.
Currently we offer 5 rooms with AC, 2 triple rooms and 3 double rooms.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
The room rate always includes:
*a private room with ceiling fan and private balcony or patio/ terrace, please check if you booked a room with AirCon if this is a must for you.
* basic amenities like soap, shampoo and shower gel, towels and sheets of course.
*Hairdryer are available on request...and many other things
* a yummy Breakfast for 2 in our restaurant SUN FRANCISCO with stunning sea view in a relaxed atmosphere with excellent Barista coffee, available from 8am to 11am
*unlimited free water refills, we recommend to bring your own bottles but not needed though
*unlimited free wifi, from our three Wifi router. In some rooms the reception is unfortunately not given or weak. On the balconies the reception is mostly available for all rooms but not guaranteed.
*the use of all outdoor areas
*beach towels on request
* a friendly team which is welcoming and helping you in the reception from 8am to 6pm. We do our very best to help you with almost everything you might need. Just come and ask...
* room cleaning and fresh towels for free on every third day and on request between 9am to 4pm. Please don't take our bath towels to the beach.
OTHER SERVICES WITH EXTRA CHARGE:
Any other services on-site like Yoga, Airport shuttle, car parking, day trips, cooking classes, laundry service etc. are available for an extra charge, please get in contact with us in the reception for further details.
A REQUEST:
Please note: Room service is not available at any time.
Anyway we kindly and fervently ask our guests to not have food in the rooms, it's in your own interest. Please have food in one of the restaurants. Please avoid unnecessary waste from outside as Varkala still has a very limited and malfunctioning garbage disposal system. The biggest problems we are facing with food waste mixed with plastics and more. We appreciate the support of our guests in this matter.
OUR COMMON AREAS:
Furthermore we are offering lots of outdoor areas to relax exclusively for all our guests. In the middle of the property between the guesthouses you’ll find our cosy garden lounge with Sofas and a huge table. It’s the perfect place to relax in the shade, read a book or have a tea, there is a water kettle to serve yourself.
On our huge rooftop we are offering in the season (October till March) daily Yoga classes. There you’ll also find a sitting area to relax in the times when there are no Yoga Classes running. There’s always a nice breeze going and from there you can even enjoy the view of the ocean.
The favourite place for almost all our guests is our old cosy Garden Cafe, the heart of Mad about Coco. Here everyone is welcome anytime to meet us or other guests and have chats with likeminded people from all over the world. The Café is the perfect place to connect to our wifi and work with your laptop or sit with a snack and a coffee in our re-opened restaurant SUN FRANCISCO, located directly at the Cliff with stunning sea views. Here we serve the included Breakfast.
DOGS:
You will meet up to 4 dogs on our premises, we feed them and take care of vaccination and needed medical care. Yet they are still strays and its impossible to chain or lock them or even chase them away.
People who are afraid of dogs or with a pet hair allergy better book another place.
Many stray dogs are moving around freely in the cliff area and in the streets, not only on our premises. You cannot avoid meeting stray dogs.
Please understand that we cannot be responsible when meeting a dog is going wrong. Our best advise is to ignore ALL dogs, don't look in their eyes, don't touch them, don't talk to them, nor whistle or snap with your fingers and never attack them.
NOT SUITABLE FOR FAMILIES WITH BABIES/KIDS & OLDER GENERATION:
We recommend that no guests under the age of 10 years stay in our houses, as running and screaming kids can attract the dogs to get closer.
Another reason why we think our B&B is not suitable for families with babies/small children and elder people is that we don't offer services to cater their special needs. Our main customers are young traveller and on weekends it can be noisy at night.
HOW TO GET HERE:
The International Airport in Trivandrum is just a one hour and 15 minutes drive by taxi from our house. A shuttle service can be organized for an extra charge of 2400 INR upon request.
The Varkala Sivagiri train station is about 3 km from Mad about Coco. There are always rickshaws waiting in front of the train station to bring the tourists for 150 INR to the Cliff. It takes about 10 minutes to our house.

We can arrange Ayurveda Treatments, Surfing, Kayaking and Stand-Up-Paddling- Tours on the Backwaters and day trips in the surrounding area. Our taxi service and a external laundry service are available.
Mad about Coco is offering daily Yoga Classes and is hosting a few Yoga Retreats per season.
Mad about Coco can also be rented for groups of up to 25 people. It is the perfect place to offer Yoga Retreats, teacher training or workshops.
OFF- SEASON:
Most activities are only offered in the high season, the beach is vanishing for a few weeks during monsoon, swimming in the off season is prohibited and extremely dangerous. During monsoon the streets and at times also the properties are under water, it's not easy to move around and get services as usual.
POWER OUTAGES:
Also Power outages can happen more regularly but it is rarely taking longer than a few hours. We don't provide a power backup. Running big generators to cover a huge business like ours is very costly and for a few days in the year not profitable and we simply don't want to pass on that extra cost to our guests. We kindly ask for your understanding. There are only very few hotels with generators. We request you to stay there when this service is essential for you.
Guest access
Our guests have access to our cosy garden lounge, the Rooftop, a Sun Deck and the Mad about Coco Café, the heart of the Resort. Here you can always meet us and other guests, read, relax, work...
You can also enjoy the beautiful view from our rooftop terrace and join our daily yoga classes (in high season).
During your stay
From August until May I'm in the Resort and take care of my guests. Three months of the year I'm visiting my family and I'm traveling to recharge my batteries. Anyway I'm almost always available online.
In that time Mad about Coco will be managed by a small team who are welcoming our guests and take care of everything.
Other things to note
Yoga Classes are not not included in the room rate. Please ask for the rates.
There are occasional power breakdowns in our area. In this unpredictable time, our service with regards to Wifi / fan & AC/ etc. is not available and water to rooms is limited.
The Internet in India may occasionally drop out at times as well, however, the solution to the problem is almost always in the hands of the provider. We will always do whatever is in our control to find a solution to the problem.
