Cliff Cottage is a rare seafront retreat in Sheringham, where you can step outside and reach the sea within moments. Designed for coastal stays and remote working, with high-speed Wi-Fi and a calm, comfortable space.

While the cottage itself does not have sea views, the shoreline is immediately on your doorstep.

Many guests stay for several weeks, using Cliff Cottage as a base for coastal walks or working by the sea. An Edwardian cottage in a unique position, just moments from Sheringham town.

The space
Designed for longer stays, Cliff Cottage is fully furnished and ready to settle into:

• Ideal for a couple, with space to spare
• Double bedroom (first floor) and twin bedroom (ground floor)
• Ground floor bathroom with walk-in shower
• Private courtyard garden
• Seafront location in Sheringham

White walls, coastal maps and nautical prints create a light, airy feel throughout. The kitchen is well equipped for everyday cooking, with an oval table for four.

Upstairs, the double bedroom is bright and restful, while the ground-floor twin offers flexibility for guests or a separate space to retreat.

Open the living room doors onto the courtyard garden and settle into a quieter rhythm of the day.

Cliff Cottage is particularly well suited to longer stays - whether you’re working remotely, focusing on a project or simply taking time to slow down by the coast.

Life in Sheringham revolves around the sea. The coastal path runs for miles in both directions, climbing the cliffs to Beeston Hill, where wide views open across the North Norfolk landscape.

Cliff Cottage offers a calm, comfortable base from which to step out, explore and return again.

Neighborhood highlights

In between the ice cream and fish and chip shops, Sheringham's streets are full of proper, useful stores. There's a brace of butchers, a greengrocer, old-fashioned bakers, such as Craft Bakery and the Bakehouse Sheringham, and the endlessly useful ironmonger, Blyth & Wright. There's an outdoor market every Saturday and also on Wednesdays between April and November. Cliff Cottage is within easy walking distance to the town and to essential shops, like Tesco and Sainsbury's.

Grab Tex Mex at Guac&Mole, dirty fries at Fat Teds Streat Food, seafood at Fishmongers' Tavern and wood-fired pizzas from Stubby's (order a takeaway or eat in at the revamped restaurant). For something fancier, there's Nepalese cuisine at The Bank or inventive seasonal menus at No. 10. When the sun is shining (and it’s not too windy), there's no better spot for a hearty breakfast overlooking the sea than at the Whelk Coppers Tearoom. Thinking locals love The Crown pub and its Monday quiz nights.

Sheringham is our sweet spot on the Norfolk coast: a proper, year-round place that’s smarter than the down-at-heel resorts to the east and more affordable than the Prosecco ghettos to the west. Where else will you find Morris dancing, a heritage steam railway and an annual Viking festival that concludes with the burning of a longship?

There is a serious social scene. Many of the pubs and restaurants hold music nights - the Sheringham Shantymen get top billing - while the Sheringham Little Theatre punches above its weight, offering plays, film screenings, musical tributes, drama and cabaret, as well as monthly jazz and family events. There’s the new state-of-the-art Reef Leisure Centre and endless opportunities for walks. Highlights include the National Trust-run Sheringham Park, with miles of hilly countryside covered with gorse and purple heather., and offers superb sea views; and Beeston Bump, infamous as the lair of Black Shuck, the ghostly red-eyed dog that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mystery, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

It’s no mystery why Sheringham’s two blue flag beaches are so cherished - children love fishing in the rock pools at low tide and if you go snorkelling on calm days in late July and early August, when the sediment drops, you can see the aquatic life of the north Norfolk chalk reef, thought to be the biggest in Europe. Surfers can enjoy some of the best waves on the east coast (book lessons at Glide Surf School in nearby Cromer) and the wild swimmers are at it in all weathers, not only at New Year. The local swimmers’ group - the Sheringham and North Norfolk Bluetits - has 1,900 members on FB - and those in the know warm-up afterwards in a wood-fired sauna at Saunabox, a converted horse trailer on the East Promenade.

Read Sebastian Faulks' 'Birdsong' novel or listen to Ralph Vaughan Williams' 'A Sea Symphony' and it is clear that they drew inspiration from this cheerful and beautiful town of Sheringham.

Cliff Cottage, Sheringham, is owned by Hannah Wessely. My home is Beeston Hills Lodge, where I live with my 11-yo daughter, Florence, and two tabby cats. In fact, we live just next door to Cliff Cottage, since this property adjoins our home; and this means that, by day and night, we’re on hand to help. We love where we live here in the seaside town of Sheringham, with sandy beaches, big skies and breathtaking views over the North Sea.
