An apartment in a big country house

Big sofas, games, child-friendly antiques, mostly en-suite big bedrooms, open fires with wood provided, big eat-in kitchen, huge snooker room.

Two entertainment rooms with a catering kitchen (available for a cost)

Two private fenced gardens with outdoor games and bbqs

Shared lawns, walks, woods, lake, bike trail, space to run around and play games

Sleeps 14 + 2 double sofa beds and fold up beds available. An adjacent cottage sleeping 6 available

The space
An apartment and cottage in a Georgian country house. A large light kitchen with Victorian pews

A big living room with huge sofas, TV, games and an open fire. Also a double sofa bed

Large bedrooms with mostly super king beds (one can be made into singles), twins and bunks; four with four en-suite and two with adjoining loo. Room for kid's beds and cots, dog beds, provided on request and at a cost.

5 rooms on the second floor, with another double room with a bathroom and kitchenette, with a double futon, on the third

Garden, lakeside, private drive; bikes. Walks from the door, pubs with fires, and wild swimming down the drive. Local town with market, small shops, Tudor pubs, cinema, indoor pool. Shrewsbury, a medieval town 30 min away. Ironbridge 35 min away. Ludlow 1 hr away.

The house is 300 years old and 2* (the top 4% of listed houses), so has a very high historical landmark status, so sometimes the house can be not how a modern house would be, as we have to put the house first for Heritage England planning

Obviously a large environmental cost is laundry: we use pure cotton and clean and press it at a high temperature (for safety), so if you are able to bring your own, we'd like to offer you a 30% discount.

We aren't able to have candles, due to the risk to an important wood framed house: we have low lighting electric lamps and fairy lights, that do a glow that is similar. Strangely we can have open fires, but you must put the fireguards on before leaving the room

The rose room has a double day bed as well as a superking, at the foot of the big bed, so prob better for children, or people you know well.

There is a catering kitchen on the ground floor in the main house, with a six burner very large industrial cooker; there is a very large dining room next to it, and a saloon opposite that gets the afternoon sun, with rather shabby hand painted ceiling and gold decoration, (a wood fire is the only heating in the saloon)

The tower is on the floor above, and has its own bathroom and kitchenette, and double futon bed (and space for 3 extra beds) in the kitchenette. It’s up more spiral stairs. It is available at an extra cost

The cottage is close by, and sleeps 6, at an extra cost

For eating outside;
cutlery, glasses and crockery and bbq tools
a kettle, tea and coffee etc
2 Webber wood/charcoal bbqs, outdoor electric Ninja pizza oven and slow cooker, and also Ninja grill, both outdoor
Pellet pizza oven w pellets

Guest access
A wing of a large country house with a cottage. Gardens and woodland. Guests have a private entrance, courtyard and garden, and shared gravel carpark. EV charger. Explore the grounds, lakeside and the woods, shared with us, who live next door and are friendly
Hourly bus to Shrewsbury, Uber to Stafford 45 min, do pre book (mainline, 1hr 20 to London, less to Birmingham, Manchester, Crewe)

Other things to note
We have a large friendly family dog, and a cat (not allowed in the accommodation). Dog and child friendly place. Stairs (about 20) up to the accommodation, straight and spiral. Stairs (about 8) down to the games room. No amplified music outside, as we have neighbours. But do play guitar around the fire pit.

Ask us to help you with country stuff to do, boots, the local farm shop with kids' activities, lasagne or stew when you arrive (£5/pp) or anything else! We love having you, do let us know anything you need

If you fancy fake tan, there’s a pack of disposable sheets and pillows, cleaner etc; I’m afraid we have to charge if we can’t get it out of our sheets (as they are lovely pure cotton), in the cupboard

There are boxes of supplies for young children (waterproof sheets etc) and also a large chest of toys

There's also a box of supplies for dogs, an outdoor tap for hosing off, and beds and dog towels on request. The apartment is thoroughly cleaned, esp after dogs (hence the extra fee for dogs, that goes to extra cleaning)

Neighborhood highlights

We love hosting. Child and dog friendly. In 1721 our ancestor built the house to be like an Italian Palazzo, and we came back from working in London to look after it, after lockdown. An 18th estate rewilded, but with all mod cons like very hot water, fast wifi – 125 Mbps, nice cotton sheets, Nespresso machine! Also with flowers, trees, water, lots of wildlife, badgers, otters, hawks. We also grow our own organic flowers and vegetables, and have hens. Children are extremely welcome to help with them and have a cuddle with them. Swings, private lakeside for picnics and a fire, with picnic tables on the island. There's a more exciting council playground half a mile away

A quiet rural area (but with a corner shop 5 min drive/bike away, open til 11 with a bakery and wine) with a private lake, woods, with wild swimming at the mill pond at the end of the drive.

Happily we are 10 mins drive from The Bear, which may be the best pub in England! In September 2022 it got a five-star review in The Telegraph - saying "the food is magnificent..with utterly charming staff and an air of slick hospitality, The Bear is impeccable". Its still a local and some menus are attached below.

Fordhall Community Farm is a couple of miles away, with countryside events, lots for children, and a good kitchen/dining room, butchery and shop, cute piglets, walks around the farm. Market Drayton, the nearest town, 10 minutes drive away, has a 1,000 year old chartered market on Wednesdays, with a growing food scene, restaurants, local shops and pubs, with home brewed beer, and a swimming pool and community cinema. Shrewsbury, a historic town, is 30 mins away, with great antiques and book shops, independent dress shops and a craft market on some Saturdays, also great restaurants and cafes, and boats on the river! Ironbridge Gorge is 30 min away. Cardingmill Valley and the Shropshire hills are great to walk

Owners live in the adjacent house, but won't encroach. Its a big house
We are very happy to help with supermarket shops etc and can put your shopping in the fridge/cupboard before you come
Also we can do a lasagne for you with salad, bread and wine, ready for you hot in the oven (£40/£60 with wine)
We also have a cottage on Airbnb that sleeps six, in the grounds, which you can combine

Hi! We have been restoring our old family house. We like art, travel, family, all sorts of things. We often stay in Airbnb’s when travelling. My family include my husband, his teen daughter, my sister, dogs and cats! We’ve done a holiday let at home for 20 years. We enjoy meeting the people it hosts! We live in rural Shropshire, which is beautiful and so green
