4.9 out of 5 average rating, 210 reviewsNEW- Somewhere Over the Rainbow -3 bed w/AC- Hilo
Our family of 5 really enjoyed our stay at the Rainbow house. The location is very central in Hilo and close to lots of restaurants and snorkeling spots. The house itself was well stocked, spotless, and very comfortable. The hosts also equipped it with lots of jumping off points: beach and snorkeling gear, games, tour brochures, and some cookies, honey, snd coffee to get you going. Parking was also really easy, the spot is 5 feet from the front door. Fans, big screened windows, and A/C provided lots of options to keep cool.

It was perfect for our family. Like every rental, there are pros and cons. If you are looking for a resort feel, this isn’t the place for you. It felt like a summer family home. Furniture was comfortable, but a little worn. We didn’t worry about the kids ruining something new, so it didn’t bother us. The normal wear on a house being exposed to the ocean air, but again, we didn’t mind, because it was so close to the beach. Traffic noise at night as people left the beach in the evening, but because it was on a dead end, not much noise after the park closed. No AC, but it was not needed at all. I didn’t realize how much I missed sleeping with the windows open and hearing the surf at night was fabulous. The house was spacious, bathrooms were large, kitchen well stocked with things we needed. There were lots of towels for the beach and lots of snorkeling gear, nothing needed. We had a 6 AM flt, so not having to strip beds and do a lot of cleaning made it a winner for me!

We loved the jungle feel and sounds of Suzy’s place while at the same time having it being so convenient to Hilo, Volcano, points north, and south, including Pahoa. We appreciated having use of beach chairs (there were also noodles and goggles—we added to that collection), the peaceful back deck for eating breakfast and saying hello to the birds and adorable geckos, and the washer and dryer. We also appreciated the guide book and reading Suzy’s recommendations. Great place, great stay.

We loved the view. It was beautiful and clean home. I loved how it had a master room with a view and a whole separate area. It was clean and just what we expected. Thank you!

What a serene and delightful experience! Thank you so incredibly much, Jacklynn, for sharing this magical place with your guests. The cabin was fully equipped with anything you may need, and the grounds were so welcoming and lush to explore and feel at ease.

Lindsay’s place was just right for our group of 3. There was just enough space where we felt comfortable. The place was super clean and we felt right at home! One of us had to work from home and he had no problem with the wifi. About 9 minutes from here is a restaurant I highly recommend checking out - Kaleo’s! Overall, I would recommend Lindsay’s place!

Scott’s place is simply beautiful. Directly across the street from Kehena Beach, watched the sunrise over the ocean from my balcony every day. Peaceful, comfortable and Scott was very helpful and responsive. Definitely do your research on the area, if you’re looking for something near a resort or with a lot of shops and restaurants this is not for you. (We knew all this coming in and the location was exactly what we expected and wanted). But there is so much in easy driving distance and so many things to see and places to explore. We really loved our stay here!

Peggy’s place is cozy and well appointed, surrounded by beautiful gardens, in a private and quiet neighborhood. It suited our group (two couples) perfectly. It was a super convenient home base for exploring the national park, and she thoughtfully arranged to have the eruption (lava fountaining) start up on the evening of our arrival.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! Wish we stayed longer. Brenda really puts a lot of thought and detail into her property. She had everything we needed to cook meals, and everything in the cottage was perfect. Out of the 5 airbnbs we stayed at during our honeymoon, this was the absolute best. It was a little remote in terms of grocery store access and good restaurants, but that is the cost of peace and privacy. Stock up, get groceries and enjoy complete serene privacy in a beautiful, immaculate and well-maintained cottage. Thank you Brenda!!!

Really great to stay at Joy and Brandon’s Jungle House on the Big Island. Lots of space and bedrooms for a big family gathering and lots to do in the area around Hilo, the volcano park and the black sand beach. We had a great Christmas adventure there and were even able to cook up a turkey and ham with all the fixings with the amenities provided! We had a few issues with supplies and laundry but Joy and Brandon took care of everything quickly and had good advice about what to do right away. I would definitely go back and grateful for the great time my family had together and Joy and Brandon’s hospitality.

Julie was very responsive to our requests! She answered very quickly and helped coordinate assistance with her son Logan, the host. They were very accommodating and the house was as described and shown in the photos. The space was excellent for a family island hop weekend stay-cation. There were lots of games, TVs (in each room) and activities to keep the kids busy. We loved the enclosed lānai space, and the kids spent a lot of time out there playing and lounging. There are several cats on the property and one small black kitty was super friendly and enjoyed being loved on by the kids. The kitty was also really friendly with our dog, who loves cats. It was a treat to find a place to fit our family that allowed us to bring our dog too. The AC was a treat, not very common in Hawai'i and it was nice to have a cool space during the warm afternoon hours while I was working remotely. We look forward to a chance to stay again! Mahalo nui!

Autumn was so amazing and pleasant to use during our whole AirBnB reservation. We ended up not staying so to several recommendations about the area. When we informed Autumn she went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and wanted to provide us reassurance that her home was safe. We still need up getting an other AirbNb, but just to make use feel comfortable!! This home is very cute and looks just like the pictures and Autumn makes sure you feel as part of her Ohana!

Incredible place and prime locations. Just walk across the street and you're at the beach. Walk a little to the left and you're at another beach with a huge wading pool. Kids loved snorkeling there. And, although I didn't know at the time of booking, the side and backyard is huge with lush tropical plants. Felt like we were in Costa Rica! As previous guests mentioned, the upstairs is apart from downstairs, with a separate side entrance (they are not connected). But there are no visible neighbors due to all the trees, so I don't know why other reviewers mentioned neighbors being loud. Such is not the case at all; but the beach across the street is public, so it gets crowded during the day. Felt completely safe the whole time.

4.88 out of 5 average rating, 16 reviewsRainforest Tea House w Pool /Rental Car Options
The house was exactly what I was looking for and more — private, safe, surrounded by nature, within 15 minutes of a beautiful beach and pet-friendly. I was also happily surprised by the number of stores 10 minutes away in Pahoa’s town center including a Whole Foods like store called Malama Market, a CVS affiliate called Longs Pharmacy, great Thai food at Ning’s Thai and delicious breakfast at the Tin Shack Bakery. The weather was also better than I expected — I’d (correctly) anticipated daily tropical rain showers, but the late mornings through afternoons were almost always sunny during my June stay. And I was also pleasantly surprised that Instacart delivery people were able to successfully deliver goods from Hilo, 30-40 mins away. The house itself is beautifully decorated. I personally loved the crystals around the bed and flickering decorative lights. Those relaxing touches along with the sounds of nature — birds, frogs, insects and intermittent tropical rain — helped set the stage for some very restful sleep. I didn’t do any cooking beyond warming things up during my time there, but the refrigerator, freezer, oven and stove worked perfectly, and the shower water was nice and warm. Also, the car I rented from Kristen was perfect for my needs. You definitely need a car when staying here and one that can handle unpaved terrain. I loved my stay, and as long as you’re ok with lizards, insects, tropical rain, spotty cellular service supplemented by GREAT wifi, friendly kittens and a dog roaming the property, you’ll likely love it too.
