Lazy Rhino of Linden
It was a pleasure staying at Charmaine’s. The house is spacious, very well equipped and comfortable - a real home away from home. The garden was also a welcome distraction for the kids. I would stay there again with pleasure. Thank you for everything Charmaine and Stefan we were so grateful for the house during a difficult few days. We felt safe and comfortable.

Stunning cottage with Sandton skyline vista
Alex was a very friendly, helpful host! The cottage is in a beautiful space and very secluded, set apart from the rest of the property. We enjoyed our stay and have already made plans to return!

Pete's Suite
Deirdre is a lovely person and well organized host. Her place has the old world charm, comfortable, warm and clean. Loved it. Guests get a welcoming bowl of fruits, cookies and all the essentials one could possibly need for a comfortable stay. There is back-up for everything electricity, water you name it. Very well organized place. My daughter and I felt so welcome and at home that we wanted to extend our stay but unfortunately it was already booked. But, will be back. Thank you D for your warm welcome and making our stay memorable.

The Pink Hound
Chiara and Jono's space was absolutely beautiful and so welcoming! They made us and our dogs feel so at home. Their two gorgeous dogs were very well behaved and friendly. We would absolutely visit again and definitely recommend the space to our family and friends 🧡

*Luxury Serviced Apartment Sandton*
The place is wonderful and the hosts are great. Very responsive and allowed me to check in super early. I really enjoyed staying at the place. It is pricey, but stunning views and great location. My only comments are that I could see some of the furniture has been stained, damaged or worn by other guests. Also for a place this expensive there were no luxury amenities. Amenities were very basic. TV in living room was a bit older so I could not get Netflicks or Youtube. Still a great place but these things would have made a great place - superb. Minor touches but this place is definitely still a 9.9/10 and I would highly recommend it.

Joburg’s favourite Airbnb - A unique gem!
A last minute find that turned out to be exactly what my mom and I needed to be close to the Linksfield hospital. Daniel provided all the relevant information and videos to make it easier to access the home. Thank you !

Johannesburg Mountainside Garden Cottage
Guy & Tanya’s cottage was the perfect landing place for my first visit to South Africa as a Black & trans American writer. The quiet, sunlit mornings with birdsong helped me focus on reading & writing. The steep hill & stairs around the cottage got me back into lifestyle physical activity, which I appreciated. Everyone I interacted with, from the vigilant staff at the entrance gate to the warm neighbor & proficient housekeeper, added to the sense of comfort & safety. When I had an issue with the space heater, the hosts were responsive, & the heating blankets on the bed were clutch. One night I was startled by several barking dogs while walking back to the cottage & Guy quickly intervened, but most days I just saw their chill dog, Django. The hosts were generous throughout my stay, letting me use laundry detergent & even offering a ride to a local café after checkout. The location is also near lots of art & culture events. It was sucha grounding place, would absolutely book again!

I had an amazing stay! The place was exactly as described—clean, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. Ruth was a fantastic host, quick to respond and super helpful with local tips. The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do, and it truly felt like a home away from home. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing and hassle-free stay. Would definitely book again!

Your guide to Johannesburg
All About Johannesburg
One of the largest cities in the world, Johannesburg — affectionately called Jozi or Joburg by South Africans — is going through a cultural reawakening. Sleek, new high-rise buildings are popping up constantly, and from the observation deck on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre you can take in the city’s unique and ever-shifting skyline. In Braamfontein, Johannesburg’s oldest district, you’ll find pop-up shops, gourmet food markets, and clubs sitting side by-side. Public art is omnipresent in the hipster-friendly Maboneng Arts District, known for its up-and-coming gallery scene and craft cocktail bars set in repurposed industrial buildings.
If you’re looking for a quieter experience, hit up a cozy cafe in the suburb of Craighall, or hunt in Linden’s boutiques and shops for mid-century furniture, antiques, and crafts. Anyone who visits this city should spend some time to learn about Johannesburg’s complex history at one of the many museums, such as the Apartheid Museum or the Nelson Mandela Museum.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Johannesburg
Visitors from the U.S. should be aware that Johannesburg’s location in the Southern Hemisphere means the seasons are opposite to what you’re used to. Winter lasts from June to August, and though the weather never gets too cold, this time of year sees the fewest visitors. The city is busiest during summer (December to February), although it also sees the most rain during this time. If you’re looking to avoid peak travel season while still enjoying good weather, spring and fall are ideal.
With the city being such a major cultural hub, there will be something going on no matter when you visit. The year kicks off with January’s Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, celebrating the composer’s birthday with a week of symphonic concerts and opera performances. In March, Hobby-X draws a wide array of craft and hobby communities.
Top things to do in Johannesburg
LoCrate Market
This self-described “lifestyle market to break all markets” is held on the first Sunday of every month in the southwestern suburb of Soweto. Hyper-local artisans sell craft beer, organic food and beauty products, and hand-made designer clothes. You’ll have your pick of food trucks to choose from before enjoying some live music, a poetry reading, or simply some people watching.
Melville Koppies Reserve
With geological findings dating back three billion years, this nature reserve and City Heritage Site is the sole conserved piece of land from before the discovery of gold near here in 1884. Hiking through the reserve’s 370 acres of indigenous grasses and wildflowers, you might forget you’re in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world — until you take in the spectacular panoramic views of Johannesburg from the top of the koppies (small hills).
Wits University Origins Centre
Located on the west campus of the University of the Witwatersrand in Braamfontein, this museum showcases the history of the region’s peoples, going back nearly 80,000 years, as well as the emergence of modern humans in southern Africa. You’ll see ancient hominid fossils, rock art and indigenous artifacts, dinosaur reconstructions, and a garden with native plants.
