"Valhalla" is a quiet retreat from civilization located on an island in South Twin Lake offering stunning views of Katahdin as well as a private sand beach and a small dock. Kids and dogs can roam freely, exploring the woods and beaches surrounding the cabin. There is dock right in front of the cabin that a small boat can be tied up to, and one float off the beach. 3 kayaks, 1 paddle board and a 16' canoe are also provided for guest use!

The space
2024 will be our fourth season renting this property but a friend helped us with the listing in 2021 so if you'd like to read those reviews, go to Airbnbcom/h/Valhalla-Cabin2

This is a rustic cabin containing a small private bedroom with a double bed (lovely soft pillow top mattress), as well as a loft accessible by ladder with 3 twin beds, and a double futon in the living area. As this cabin is located on an island, it is off grid and there is no "full time" electricity/power. There is a gas powered generator that can be turned on to run the water pump that feeds the sink and the outdoor shower, as well as to power the lights in the cabin but this is a primitive set up and the system is not designed to be run more than a couple hours a day. There is no hot water inside the house. There is a propane stove and oven for cooking and a small propane refrigerator for keeping food and beverages cold. These rustic amenities give a slight propane smell when first in use.

For bathroom facilities, there is a basic outhouse with a composting toilet about 25 feet from the cabin.

Running water is sourced directly from the lake so it is NOT FOR DRINKING. Please bring your own drinking water and ice if you'd like it.

There is no WiFi but Verizon, AT&T, and US Cellular all have service on the island, and although it is not 100% everywhere, it works most places on the island.

Towels and bed linens are not provided but pillows & pillowcases are - we recommend bringing either sleeping bags or sheets/blankets for whichever beds you plan to use during your stay.

The kitchen is stocked with plates, cups, silverware, etc. as well as basic cooking implements. Additionally, we have a pour over coffee maker (so you don’t have to turn on the generator for your morning coffee) and we provide coffee and sugar. We also supply soap, paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo/conditioner, and body wash.

There is a wood stove in the living room if it's chilly or damp and you'd like to start a fire and there's also a fire pit overlooking the lake - some firewood is provided but you may want to bring extra if you plan to have a lot of fires.

Guest access
The cabin is located on an island meaning it can only be accessed via boat. There are two options for getting to the camp:
Via a 1/4 mile paddle in a canoe (provided) off of Turkey Tail Road in Indian Purchase Township.
OR:
Via a 3.5 mile boat ride if you own or rent a power boat that can be launched at the public boat ramp at Five Lakes Lodge.

Other things to note
Please be sure you've reviewed the listing thoroughly - this is a rustic and primitive island meaning it comes with certain restrictions that we want to make sure you're aware of.

We offer the dock at your own risk. Though it is just fine for small water craft, but it may be insufficient for larger boats.
If a gale is blowing the dock may not be sufficient to hold your craft secure. We do have an outhaul on the beach which can be used to secure your boat and the sand is a soft landing, but the depth is only 4 feet in the spot so please be aware of the restrictions of you boat hull.

The propane stove and refrigerator give off a slight scent when initially lighting them and that can feel unsettling for some folks. This is normal but should be understood to avoid alarm.

Our island has tons to offer and we know you'll have a great time but if any of these items feel like they might not work for you and your group, you may want to reconsider your booking. Of course if you have any other questions about the island, please feel free to message me - I'm happy to help!
