Puffin Yurt is situated on the Island of Ulva, in a secluded plot next to Ardalum House, in an exceptionally peaceful location alongside Ulva Sound, with views of Loch Tuath in one direction and in the other, Ben Mor, the highest mountain on Mull. Ulva is rich with lush woodlands, and there are extensive moorlands to the west, with otters, red deer, seals and eagles. The geology and archeology are renowned, with walks to basalt cliffs and the Livingstone caves.

The space
Puffin Yurt is a traditional Mongolian Yurt dwelling with large double-glazed windows and doors, an adjustable skylight and wood burning stove, making a cozy retreat with stunning views and equally extraordinary wildlife all around. Guests have use of Ardalum House downstairs shower/w.c. room, and shared use of the house kitchen for food storage and cooking, though it is also possible to cook in/on the stove in Puffin Yurt.

Access to Ulva is from Ulva ferry, Mull, where the is ample free parking for cars and camper vans. Guests arrive via a small passenger ferry (£8 pp return), a crossing of just a few minutes, taking you to the Boathouse seafood cafe on the Ulva shore. From there it is a 25 minute walk on rough, sometimes muddy, tracks to Ardalum House, following the signs for the church. Kit can be transported by quad bike for £15 one way or £20 both ways. Neighborhood highlights

Ulva’s community - now numbering 16 - live in and around the ferry area, where a much larger population once lived, indicated by the disused buildings that you find on the route: ancient thatched cottage, church and manse, laird’s house, barns and byres, etc. Many of these are being renovated for housing current and future residents.
The thick, wildlife-rich woods thin out as you climb alongside the burn and onto the moorland. Highland cattle are once again being raised on the hills, from where there are views towards the Treshnish wilderness on the north shores and intricate networks of headlands, islands and sandy beaches on the south shores. This is where the renowned basalt cliffs can be found, and the archeological site of Livingstones Cave, via the waymarked woodland walks.
During weekdays the Boathouse, located by the ferry, serves drinks, snacks and cold plates, serving locally caught seafood.

My work: Run a Hostel
We, that is myself, my wife Yvette and our daughter Katy, live on Gometra. We live a simple off-grid life, living by candlelight, wood fires, foraging and scavenging. It was very exciting to be able to renovate Bearnus Cottage and bring it back into use as a guest bothy. We have tried as much as possible, to use whatever was to hand, been left on the island or washed in by the sea, in order to refurbish the place. This is integral to our philosophy of treading lightly upon the planet and trying to live and work as minimally as possible, without consuming without thinking.
