The Silo is a unique experience, and we invite you to experience it! The Silo is exactly that – a guest room built inside a grain bin. It has the traditional furnishings of a hotel room – queen bed, table with chairs, refrigerator, and microwave – but no television, running water, or indoor bathroom. It does have an outdoor kitchenette and bathroom facility. Best of all, it has spectacular views!
The space
We provide a shaded outdoor kitchenette with picnic table and cook stove, cooking and dining utensils, fresh water, bedding, linens, coffee, and board games, but the environment provides the best experience. If you are lucky, you’ll get to listen to the rain on the tin roof or the coyotes singing on the hills. Some days, our horses roam the property, and every day, our dog will stop to say hello. In the fall, you'll also hear the elk bugle. Be warned, the wind might wake you with its own loud lullaby. In the morning, watch for deer crossing on the hillside, or step across the drive to view the elk and buffalo on the neighbor’s game ranch.
The outdoor bathroom facility is built from a large culvert and includes a pit toilet and solar-heated shower. A propane fire pit is also provided as well as private parking in front of the Silo.
We get good cell service and a data connection with T-Mobile at The Silo. The wifi is being extended from the house, so it's strong enough to check your email but not capable of streaming movies or video chatting. However, high speed internet is available at the Sunroom, which is a short walk away.
At the Sunroom, the enclosed porch on the front of our house, we offer coffee and simple snacks/ breakfast items, an assortment of cold drinks and water, and high-speed wi-fi. It's all self-serve and available anytime during daylight hours.
We welcome a house trained and well behaved pet (maximum 1) who likes to sleep in their own bed on the floor and gets along well with other dogs. We provide pet bowls and sheets; please bring your own pet bed, food, and other supplies.
During the summer, you can access the Silo in a 2-wheel drive car, but the roads can get bumpy or muddy quickly (check out the road video by scanning the QR code in the photos). We recommend driving a vehicle with 4-wheel drive in late fall to early spring as the weather can be unpredictable. If you aren't sure, please ask us about the current conditions of the road.
Guest access
The Silo is located about 7 miles south of Collbran, Colorado, about 80 miles southwest of Glenwood Springs, and about 50 miles northeast of Grand Junction. Other things to note
Your rate includes snacks and drinks in the Sunroom and the standard cleaning service. If extra cleaning is needed—for example, for very dirty dishes, trash left outside, or pet hair on bedding—an additional $25 per hour may apply.
If you are a light sleeper, prefer the luxury of running water, don't love wild or domestic animals (including their smells), or would like a bit more privacy, this may not be the right experience for you. However, we have other vacation rentals that might suit your needs. Basecamp is a small guest house with all the amenities located outside the town of Collbran. If you crave even more adventure and privacy, you might try our Stagecoach Cabin, an old western off-grid cabin on the corner of our property, or the Steel and Wool Sheep Camp, a quonset hut and sheep wagon tucked in the oak brush on the backside of our property. All are listed on AirBnb.
