Boutique guest house with unique interiors and spectacular views of the mountains. Accommodates four guests, with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a large porch. Direct access to beautiful hiking trails in the surrounding cloud forests of the Laurisilva.

The space
Up in the forested mountains of Fontanales, the house is on a small plateau with views of the sea, the city, and a collection of valleys that extend to the top of the island.

It is an old house with thick walls of stone, original wood ceilings, a traditional Canary layout, and an expansive porch. We brought new life to it with a renovated kitchen, and all new furniture and lighting that mix vintage and contemporary. Some of the furniture was designed specifically for the house, handmade by a local carpenter.

The house has two bedrooms, a sitting / dressing room, a living room, kitchen, entry, and porch. It has everything you might need for a time away, with details like a smart tv, a bluetooth speaker, cooking supplies (oil, spices, etc.), and outdoor lounge furniture.

The property is 22 acres and crosses the valley in front of the house. The house is at the western edge of the property and faces northeast, so there are no nearby neighbors, nor sounds of the road. There is an overgrown road down to an old Alpendre at the bottom of the valley where cows once lived – there you can find almost complete silence, except for the songbirds who might join you.

This part of the island is known for its unique microclimate known as the Laurisilva, which is a subtropical cloud forest that exists only in islands of this latitude. The house sits near its upper bound and with an elevated vantage point, which means you can watch the mist rise up the valley from the ocean and dissipate as they climb past the house – often there will be soft clouds towards the sea and clear skies towards the peak, the house in between.

Naturally, this area is beloved for its spectacular hiking. There are some trails that are directly accessible from the house – there are maps in the house that explain these routes and more.

There are also two beautiful towns nearby – Moya and Fontanales. Moya is a larger town with an impressive cathedral on a plaza overlooking the ocean across a deep valley, and a historic house that belonged to a well known Canary poet, Tomás Morales. Fontanales is a small mountain town with a lovely plaza and an excellent restaurant (our favorite in the Islands) called La Colonial.

Just beyond these towns in either direction, there are dramatically different landscapes. Driving up the mountain you quickly rise above the Laurisilva and approach the open skies of the cumbre, the peak of the island only about a 30 minute drive. Driving down the mountain, you approach the ocean where you quickly arrive at a well known surf spot and a series of natural pools, with the city just 15 minutes beyond.

This area is a special part of a special island, and we have done our best to make the house into a unique place to experience it. We invite you to come spend some time above the clouds.

My work: Interior Designer
From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, now living in Brooklyn, NY with my husband Jonathan. I'm an interior designer and he's an architect. We love our island dearly and wanted to find a way to share its beauty, so we started this project - Sea of Clouds - to create unique stays that are lovingly designed and true to the place. We look forward to hosting you!
