The Saving the Longhorn Cabin portrays the story of how the Texas Longhorns were brought to the Wichita Mountains in 1927 in an effort to save them from extinction. The late Earl Drummond, Forest Ranger and Cache resident, played a vital role in selecting these magnificent bovine.
Nestled at the foothills of the Wichita Mountains, The Lazy Buffalo has 13 themed cabins each decorated uniquely to capture the essence of the Wichita Mountains and history of our hometown.
The space
Many say that The Lazy Buffalo resembles an Old West Town. Our Cabins are similar to a classic motel layout. There are charming touches throughout the property along with modern amenities such as Wi-fi, Netflix, and the convenience of self check in.
The Saving the Longhorn Cabin at The Lazy Buffalo has one king size bed and a full bathroom with a large walk in tiled shower accented with glass blocks. It accommodates up to 2 guests.
Knotty pine and corrugated tin are used throughout the Saving the Longhorn Cabin. Stained concrete floors and tin ceilings really add a rustic yet elegant touch. Recline back in the plush loveseat while binge watching the latest Netflix release.
The kitchenette area has a mini fridge and microwave along with table and chairs. Sip on a cup of coffee from the front porch or have a picnic in our outdoor pavilion area complete with charcoal Grill.
Both kids and adults will love tossing horseshoes and playing old fashion board games. On property, we also have fun recreation like disc golf, giant Connect 4, volleyball, and an interactive music wall in nature. Don't forget to snap photos at our themed photo ops.
During your stay, enjoy complimentary Netflix and WiFi or unplug and take in the beauty of the nearby Wichita Mountains from the covered front porch. Southwest Oklahoma sunsets are truly beautiful.
When it gets dark, roast marshmallows at the outdoor fire pit or relax under the stars in the back of our vintage star gazing pickup, located just a short walk from the cabin.
The Cabin features copies of the original photos from the Earl Drummond collection. Earl was a longtime Cache resident and Forest Ranger in the 1920s of the then called Wichita National Forest and Game Preserve. Earl helped in selecting the best Longhorn Cattle among thousands to bring to the Wildlife Refuge to preserve the breed from extinction.
We are located just three miles from the entrance to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge entrance. The Wildlife Refuge preserves 59,000 acres of mixed prairie grass, ancient mountains, lakes, and streams. Herds of bison, longhorn, and elk can be seen roaming free and there's endless recreations opportunities such as fishing, bird watching, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking.
A paved bike lane joins the property and runs throughout the Wildlife Refuge. At less than a mile from the original Quanah Parker’s Star House and minutes from Lawton Fort Sill and historic Medicine Park, there's plenty to see and do nearby.
