Neighborhood highlights

Agios Nikolaos is the cosmopolitan capital of the regional unit of Lasithi with a population of 20,000. It is a beautiful calm little town, which the Cretans simply refer to as “the Saint”. The city is built in Mandraki, on the west side of the great Bay of Mirabello, but its current name comes from the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos in Ormos west of the city.

A trademark of Agios Nikolaos is the picturesque Lake Voulismeni, a small lagoon in the city center, which is used to tie the boats. Dozens of legends are associated with it because of its very deep waters, like the fact that it is not deep. At the bottom of the lake had flown the German war material before leaving Crete in 1944. A walk around the lake is a very nice experience. Other sights of Agios Nikolaos are the neoclassical buildings, the marina (the first marina in Crete), the islet of Agioi Pantes with the protected Cretan Aegean, the Kitroplatia with its taverns, the pedestrian street with the cafes. The stairs that are almost everywhere are also impressive, since the city is built in an area with very strong slopes.

In and out of Ag. Nikolaou there are too many beaches that you can enjoy.
