Our Place:

This private retreat is located in the rural Possum Trot Valley with a small stream meandering through the hollow amidst gently rolling hills, green pastures and far reaching slopes. Straight out of a Charles Dickens novel, this lavish estate is one of the few remaining vintage homes left in the area and although it was originally built as a hotel for the CC&O Railroad in 1890, the house in it's entirety has never been used to welcome short-term guests...until now.

No parties or events are permitted anywhere in the house or on the property

Neighborhood highlights

➡️ In the early 19th century, this valley community of Possum Trot was primarily farmland, apple orchards and tobacco fields. Interestingly enough, the builder of this house, Mr Charles McPeters, was actually awarded a medal for entry of his apples in the Paris Exposition of 1900. These aforementioned apples were grown right here on the estate. The basement of the house was partitioned into apple bins which could store 10,000 bushels at one time. A team of horses loaded with apples on a wagon could turn around inside this basement.

Burnsville, a town of about 1,700 people is nestled in a valley surrounded by the highest mountain peaks in eastern America, including Mt. Mitchell. It's small downtown is dominated by the Town Square with towering trees. Burnsville is located 35 miles northeast of Asheville, along the Mt. Mitchell Scenic Byway.

The famous art school Penland School of Crafts is just 13 miles east. The Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville is a small professional theatre with shows from April through December.

Yancey County (where Burnsville is located) is full of old and new Agri-Tourism experiences. Visit local farmers markets and farms to purchase fresh produce of the season & delicious homemade treats. And in late November and December, cut your own mountain grown Christmas tree.

The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is 19 miles away, via NC Highway 80 south. Go five miles north to Crabtree Falls and 11 miles south to the entrance of Mt. Mitchell State Park. While the address for Mt. Mitchell is Burnsville, it's a 35-mile drive since you need to go all the way around the mountain for the entrance from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The great village of Spruce Pine is just 14 miles east on US 19.
