Neighborhood highlights

The Murat district of Bari stretches between the railway and the coast with orthogonal lattice roads and together with the Old Town constitutes the city's urban centre today.

The neighborhood is named after Gioacchino Murat (Napoleon Bonaparte's marshal), who inaugurated and supported, during his government at the head of the Kingdom of Naples, the construction of the new Bari area near the ancient medieval city.

In fact, Murat was to enact the decree of construction of the "new village" (or "Gioacchino", then "Muratiano") in a flat area south of the old center, while the walls that surrounded the old city were slowly being dismantled and replaced by the current Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

The Murattian neighborhood is definitely the most vibrant in the capital. In fact, the area is home to one of the most popular and vital places in the city such as Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Sparano, the most famous central street and frequented by shopping lovers.

Via Sparano is the main artery of the heart of the city, a pedestrian street longer than half a kilometer that starts from the vicinity of the historic center, Bari Vecchia, and ends at the railway station of the capital.

Obviously Via Sparano is not the only way to host commercial activities, but as you will notice during your experience in Bari, the parallel streets and the respective crosswalks are also full of shops, bars and restaurants.
