Mill Cottage is a fully-equipped self-catering holiday cottage for up to four people in the Peak District National Park.

Located beneath The Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks in the tiny hamlet of Upper Hulme, Mill Cottage is a fantastic home-from-home.

All of the major Peak attractions (Alton Towers, Chatsworth House, Shugborough, Buxton, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Ilam) are just a short drive away. It is perfect for walkers, hikers, climbers, cyclists, and those who want a cosy space in which to relax.

The space
The ground floor features a large sitting room, centred around a cosy wood-burning stove. With a squishy three-seater sofa, and two armchairs, there’s plenty of space to relax. The Smart HD TV has satellite (FreeSat) and terrestrial channels, as well as a suite of apps (Netflix, Disney+ etc.).

On the top floor, you will find:

• Master bedroom: king size bed, wardrobe
• Bedroom two: bunk beds, wardrobe
• Bathroom: bath, shower, toilet

The lower ground floor is home to a huge open plan kitchen/diner, fully equipped with a Bosch electric oven and induction hob, microwave, washing machine, fridge with freezer compartment, dining table and another comfy sofa.

The kitchen gives access to the glorious suntrap of a garden

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire property.

Other things to note
Kids always have a great time here: the garden backs onto the mill stream and is safely fenced in to stop the more adventurous taking an early bath.

Just across the road is a ford and small waterfall, perfect for exploring.

Please note that there are no stair gates on the two staircases, so do bear this in mind if you have toddlers.

The stairs to the top floor are very steep, and not suitable if any member of the party has mobility issues.

NB: Mill Cottage is strictly non-smoking.

Neighborhood highlights

Mill Cottage, as the name suggests, was part of a silk-dyeing mill works, up until the early 1970s. Set in Upper Hulme, a tiny but busy hamlet between Leek and Buxton, there is a rich industrial heritage right on the cottage’s doorstep.

A short walk up the farm track opposite the ford is the restored Dains Mill, said to date back to the 1500s. Churnet Valley (best explored on the Churnet Valley Railway) is packed with flint mills, copper works and old mine workings.

Upper Hulme is home to several farms, and the old mill and dye works buildings now house some thriving businesses.

For walkers and climbers, The Roaches and Hen Cloud are a ten-minute amble away. The views across the Peak District and west across Cheshire towards the Welsh border are simply stunning, and the climbing is world class.

Cyclists of all types and abilities will enjoy the challenges of the local hills, tracks and trails. In Mill Cottage you can find several local maps and trail guides to help you plan your walking or cycling route.

‘Ye Olde Rock Inn’ is a fantastic pub, a couple of minutes' walk up the hill from Mill Cottage. Here you’ll find a huge menu, a great bar and a welcoming atmosphere.

For fun: I ride bikes, do a bit of climbing, run folk gigs & make a lot of sawdust & swarf. For work: I make the internet do things. Usually against its will.
