Neighborhood highlights

Our house sits on top of a hill with little traffic. Safe and quiet neighborhood. We know all of our neighbors, and they are good folks—lots of privacy and space.

Just 400 feet west from our museum home is Hannibal’s first cemetery and is where Twain’s dad and brother Henry were originally laid to rest. It’s also the cemetery referenced in the The Adventures of Tom Sawyer where Tom and Huck witnessed Injun Joe murder Doc Robinson and framed Muff Potter. The Haunted Hannibal ghost tour explores this cemetery for about 20 minutes and they highlight our museum home as they drive past it. When Twain was growing up, families would have to sit on a fresh grave for a few weeks. Otherwise Dr. McDowell would steal the cadaver to study anatomy and perform experiments. He owned Mark Twain Cave for 20 years and used that to keep his cadavers. He started the first school of medicine west of the Mississippi and is the father of the MU Medical School. He is believed to be the character Doc Robinson in the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The kids would explore the cave and find the cadavers and tell scary stories to the younger children. The town folks eventually persuaded Dr. McDowell to sell the cave and leave Hannibal.
