Where you’ll be

Santa Luzia, Faro, Portugal

In a scenario of light and beauty stands before the blues of the sky and the sea, Santa (website hidden) 430 hectares, this is the smallest parish in the county and has 1,455 inhabitants. Located about 2 kilometers from Tavira, this village carries in its essence the customs and knowledge of the people of the sea.

According to the records, Santa Luzia was born in 1577, on the initiative of the fishermen, when they built a hermitage dedicated to a saint of the same name, a Sicilian martyr and protector of those who suffer from the eyes. Santa Luzia has thus become the patron saint of the parish.

The history of the village was always connected to the sea. Initially through fishing for shávegas and hooks and, from 1842 until the middle of the twentieth century, with the appearance of the Barril frame, through the tuna cupjo. From 1927 onwards, fishermen began to devote themselves to fishing for the octopus with tarts and lairs, this fact contributed to the fact that, today, Santa Luzia is considered the "capital of the octopus".

Years later, on December 29, 1984, this village, formerly part of the parish of Santiago, was elevated to parish seat and became a village in 1999.

Today, still of fishing nature, this parish also lives on tourism, with accommodation, restaurants and quality beaches. Designated as the "octopus capital", Santa Luzia provides all its visitors with true moments of harmony and well-being.

Enjoy the life of this village and the fishing gear that live in an atmosphere of harmony with the tourism and hospitality of the Santaluzienses.

What to visit?

Igreja Matriz de Santa Luzia

Former Armação do Atum

Situated on Barril Beach, its origin dates back to the year 1842. Its state of conservation is good, and the space has been converted into a commercial area with shops, restaurants, cafes, gelataria and bar. Near the frame, it is possible to contemplate, along the sand, an "anchor cemetery" that adorns the area.
