Lily of the Valley is a 100-year-old chestnut post-and-beam hunting lodge bordered by the forever-wild Catskills Forest Preserve. Listed as one of West Shokan's Historic Homes, it has a calming view out over a spring-fed pond, and is serenaded by the sound of Wittenberg Stream across the road. Enjoy a light-filled bedroom upstairs, a living room with cozy gas fireplace, and an airy bathroom with a claw-foot tub. It's the perfect place to disconnect, relax, and fall in love with nature.

The space
Once you arrive on the property, you’ll notice the difference in the air. It is clean, clear, and refreshing—and only made more soothing thanks to the meditative sound of the nearby river. When you walk through the front door, you’ll find a comfortable living room and fireplace perfect for getting cozy with a good book and a glass of wine (or tea). With its open floor plan, the cabin’s downstairs invites you to relax, cook a meal, take a nap, or open the french doors to stroll out onto the wrap-around porch for a view of the Catskill Mountains beyond. The bathroom has a clawfoot tub with a newly installed stand-up shower, washer/dryer, and blinds for complete privacy.

As you walk upstairs, you’ll notice the single-branch railing dating back to the early 1900s, when this rustic cabin was fashioned as a camp for loggers and hunters. Upstairs, you’ll find an open, light-filled library room with a comfortable queen-sized bed sandwiched between floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pond and the woods beyond. As you wake up each morning, these windows invite you to rise with the sun, and doze back to sleep as the leaves rustle in the trees. Upstairs there is also a desk space that's perfect for writers.

Guest access
The entire cabin is yours. You are also welcome to enjoy our pond (swim at your own risk) and stroll the grounds around our house, which is the renovated barn across the pond.

Other things to note
Note that this is an antique 100-year-old cabin in a rural area. If you're not charmed by everything the great outdoors has to offer, you may prefer a more modern accommodation.

Neighborhood highlights

Lily of the Valley is part of a small three-building compound near the end of a dead-end, lightly traveled road. About a quarter of a mile up the road is access to a hiking trail, which offers an exciting bushwhack up to two mountaintop vistas (to learn more about this hike, lookup “Friday Mountain Balsam Cap” on AllTrails). We are a 10-minute drive to groceries (the Boiceville IGA), and there are several great restaurants within a ~15-minute drive (Bread Alone, the Phoenicia Diner, The Pines, Foxfire Mountain House, to name a few). We are also a 15-minute drive to the Ashokan Reservoir Promenade, a 25-minute drive to Woodstock, a 20-minute drive to Peekamoose Blue Hole, a 30-minute drive to Kingston, and 30-minute drive up to Belleayre Mountain.

I work in publishing and the arts, and live in New York’s Catskill Mountains. I’m originally from Vermont, and have also lived in Brooklyn (3 years) and San Francisco (7 years). I love a good sunset + beer + beach combo, and take a lot of pleasure in spending time with my husband, son, and pup out in nature.
