A nationally designated cultural property from Meiji Period

A dignified residence sits in a small valley near the sea on the Izu Peninsula. Reserved for one party only. Find the comfort of coming home at Izu Valley House.

There are four designated cultural assets within the grounds: the main house, the nagayamon (gatehouse), the kura (storehouse), and the stone walls.

— A hometown three hours from Tokyo —
Cross the bridge over the brook and open the gate, and you step into another world.

The space
Enjoy the entire 140-year-old national heriage listed house and its garden in complete privacy—yours alone for the length of your stay.

Set in the serene hamlet of Kamiono in Minami-Izu, at the very southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, this is a residence that has been lovingly kept since the Meiji era. It is a place where time moves a little more slowly, and where the rhythms of an older Japan are still quietly present.

In June 2026, the tatami, shōji, and fusuma of the Japanese-style rooms were renewed throughout. Woven from fine igusa rush grown in Kumamoto, the new tatami fill the rooms with that unmistakable "fragrance of Japan"—a scent that invites deep and restful sleep.

Gather with family or close friends in the sanma-tsuzuki, a suite of three Japanese rooms that open into one another, and lie side by side beneath the same roof. Here, in a setting shaped by generations, the hours pass gently and warmly.

Our hope is that this house becomes the kind of retreat you carry with you—a historic kominka of quiet dignity that returns to mind, years later, as a place where your heart was at ease.

The house is a rare survival of two traditions that can no longer be recreated: the namako lattice plasterwork distinctive to Izu, and a structure built entirely of keyaki (zelkova) wood. Among its restored treasures are fusuma adorned with the classic gold-leaf turnip (kabura) motif.

Within, you will find a generous doma (earthen-floored hall), the three connecting Japanese rooms of the sanma-tsuzuki, and a study. When fully partitioned with fusuma, the house offers four separate bedrooms (three Japanese rooms and two study rooms). We usually leave the fusuma removed, as the open flow of the rooms is part of the house's character—but if you would prefer them in place, simply let us know in advance.

《A note for families》

This is a nationally significant heritage house, and many of its elements are irreplaceable. We therefore ask that you visit with children who are old enough to treat the fusuma, shōji, and other delicate fittings with gentle care. Among these are fittings cut from single solid slabs of keyaki and fusuma papers dating to the Meiji era—pieces that, once damaged, can never be replaced. We are deeply grateful for your understanding and care.

Guest access
The storehouse (kura) and the nagayamon gatehouse are not open for entry. We kindly ask that you refrain from accessing these areas, as they form part of the protected heritage of the property. Thank you for your understanding.

Other things to note
Children:

Please stay with us only with children old enough to handle fusuma (sliding paper doors), shōji (paper screens), and other delicate fittings with care.

The house contains fittings made from single solid slabs of keyaki (zelkova) wood, as well as fusuma papers dating from the Meiji era. Many of these items, once damaged, can no longer be obtained today. We kindly ask for your utmost care.
