Step into the world of Bruce Chatwins 'On the Black Hill'. Tucked into the slopes that inspired his masterpiece and located just a stones throw from the former cottage of the late Raymond Williams, academic & author of 'People of the Black Mountains'. Lying between Hay On Wye and Abergavenny, at the foot of the Black Hill (Grib Y Garth ) and enjoying origins as an old farm apple store, it provides a sanctuary for writers and nature lovers.
The space
The hut is set in its own private grounds, an on going project in natural rewilding. The space has 12 volt lighting .
Please note there are no mains electric power sockets. Inside provides a comfortable living area with wood burner together with cooking space, double gas hob, kettle, Espresso stove top coffee maker, toaster and small fridge. Comfy seating for 2 on a leather sofa. There is a cosy bedroom with double bed and picture window. Integral to the building is a kitchen sink and food prep area. There is also an adjoining enclosed hot shower. The hut has its own private composting toilet located close by. A fire pit provides a great way to barbecue with picnic seating and table. A further bench seat is located amongst the trees to enjoy the tranquility of the place and birdsong. There are 2 local pubs within 2 miles The Bridge Inn & The Bulls Head, both serving food. There is direct mountain access on foot from the cabin with walks onward to Offas Dyke & Hay Bluff. The hut and Black Hill neighbour the border of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Guest access
The site is exclusively for guests to enjoy, extending to around an acre, the hut is south facing in aspect with a wooded area given over to nature together with an area of grass for picnicking. You can walk direct from the hut up onto Crib Y Garth mountain (Cats Back Ridge), and the Offas Dyke path. The hut is close to 2 pubs, both within 2 miles.
Please note we are in a rural area and there is no public transport to the hut.
Other things to note
One complementary basket of logs is provided. The woodburner will be made up ready to light with kindling and firelighters. Extra logs and kindling etc are available to purchase if you are staying for multiple nights locally at Hopes of Longtown, or the co-op in Hay on Wye. Bedding and towels are provided. Please note 4G signal is available depending on your network provider. Being off-grid there are no mains sockets for appliances. We do provide a complimentary welcome pack which includes the following, a pint of milk, coffee, tea bags, bottled drinking water, salt and pepper, washing up liquid, toilet roll and shower gel. Please bring your own BBQ charcoal. We don't accept children under the age of 15, infants, toddlers or babies due to its proximity to a mountain stream and steep sided banks. Sorry no dogs allowed.a

A great destination for walkers and nature lovers. The hut is located between Abergavenny and Hay on Wye the Borders book town. Our local Gastro pub, 1.5 miles from the hut has won numerous awards for its field to fork cuisine and is featured in the Mitchelin guide. I would advise booking ahead if you wish to dine there during your stay.

We moved to our beautifull location here in the Black Mountains almost a decade ago. Drawn by its unspoilt tranquil valleys full of nature. We share the small holding with our collection of pet sheep and hens. We restored the old hut for people to experience this unique place.
