The schoolhouse was built in the early 1900s. Grades 1 - 8 occupied the four classrooms, with two grades to each of the four classrooms. Many of the old architectural details remain, including the grand staircase, double door foyer entryway, original hardwood pine floors and original millwork. The windows are over 90 inches tall, providing light to all the rooms throughout the day.
Guest comfort is of utmost importance. Unlike other properties, we have purchased linens specifically for guest use and do not use old hand-me-down towels and sheets. All items are selected for comfort and style. Each bed offers premium supportive down pillows (with pillow protectors!) and luxurious down comforters during the winter months. The mattresses are comfortable and not too firm for a great night's rest (they are also covered with protectors). Towels and washcloths are provided. All bedding (including duvet covers) and towels are washed after each guest. You can rest assured that your safety and hygiene are of the utmost importance.
All decor has been hand selected and curated by the host. The Schoolhouse includes an array of unique antiques (hand painted signs, mod electric fireplace, typewriters, games) and features a curated selection of mid-century antique furniture. In addition, old photographs of the school during its operation are displayed around the room along with the owner's paintings and prints in the guest room, kitchen, foyer and bathroom.
This is a unique space -- don't miss your chance to experience such a wonderful rural retreat!
Guest access
As a guest, you will have access to the downstairs level, which contains your bedroom and guest bathroom. The upstairs and kitchen are private. I only rent out one guest room.
Your private bedroom has a TV connected to Apple TV & Hulu. There is also an outdoor deck for lounging.
Other things to note
I share this home with my guests and will occasionally be present when guests are here. My bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. The downstairs level is for guests. The only reason I come downstairs is to use the kitchen or the front entrance.
I have a cat named Tarot who is always present at the house. If you have allergies, please take note. We vacuum thoroughly before every stay. I never let my cat sleep or linger in the guest room.
There is only AC in the guest room. The bathroom does not have AC. The building has very high ceilings and I can only cool a limited amount of space!
The downstairs level has two large rooms (the guest room, the kitchen) and a shared foyer space with the stairway to the upstairs level and the guest bathroom. The last image in the listing shows a floor plan depicting the layout of the space.
The kitchen and the guest bedroom do share a wall and there is minimal noise transfer into the guest room from the kitchen. When I am present I do my best to be quiet for guests, although I do use the kitchen to prepare meals and there will be a certain amount of unavoidable noise.
Guests also cross the shared foyer space to use the bathroom. Because this building was set up as a public school and not a residential home, the layout is unconventional. This has never been an issue for the majority of guests. If you're very uncomfortable with any interaction between host and guest, it might be better to book another property.
Please make sure that you read the "policies" section before your stay to make yourself aware of the house rules. Much appreciated in advance!
