Nestled deep in the mountains of the Kumano region, Doratei—“Residence with a Gong”—offers peace, quiet, and a retreat into nature.
Set by the crystal-clear Hidakagawa River at the foothills of Mt. Nenjudake, the only sounds you’ll hear are birdsong and flowing water.
Ideally located in the heart of the Kii Peninsula, it’s the perfect base for exploring by car, with Mt. Koya, Shirahama, and the UNESCO-listed Kumano Hongu Taisha and Nachi Falls just over an hour away.
The space
Rest easy in two cozy tatami-covered rooms with four comfortable beds. Each bed comes with a fluffy pillow, a firmer bead pillow, and a thick, soft duvet. The house is fully air-conditioned with heating and cooling functions, while the kitchen has ceiling fans for those who prefer the natural breeze from spring through autumn.
❖ Kitchen
Designed for longer stays, the kitchen is fully equipped with a large 460-liter fridge, microwave, Cuisinart toaster, 3-hob induction stove, cooking pans, pots, an electric rice cooker for 5 cups of rice, Nespresso coffee machine with complimentary pods, and a coffee grinder and Hario metal V60 dripper.
Cooking essentials such as cooking oil, salt, sugar, peppers, mirin, and cooking sake are also stocked. Our pesticide & herbicide-free rice grown with mountain spring water is available for sale.
❖ Toilet, Bathroom & Vanity
The toilet features Toto’s latest Neorest bidet, the vanity has a handmade copper sink, and the bathroom includes an automatic fill function for effortless soaking. Amenities include cotton earbuds, plush Imabari bath towels, a hairdryer, and a washer-dryer with eco-friendly liquid detergent.
❖ Quiet Surroundings
Set apart from other houses, Doratei offers ample space to relax. The nearest river access point is just a minute away, though the rocky dirt path requires proper footwear.
❖ Hiking Trails
The surrounding trails are steep, challenging, and rarely visited—perfect for experienced hikers who can read topographic maps. These routes, once used by mountain ascetic monks, take 6–9 hours to complete.
For an easier yet rewarding trek, Hyakkenzan Nature Reserve (90 minutes away) offers scenic trails, a waterfall, and a secluded natural pool for swimming.
For a gentler walk, cross the suspension bridge and follow the quiet riverside lane on the opposite side, a peaceful 40-minute circuit accompanied by the sound of flowing water.
❖ Swimming in the River
The shallow, crystal-clear Hidakagawa River is perfect for swimming from April to October. The water turns icy cold from November to March.
Caution: Children must be supervised at all times and should not play near the rapids upstream. Horseflies are active in July, August, and early September—avoid swimming on cloudy days or around sunset when they are most aggressive.
❖ Fireflies
In early June, fireflies can be seen near the river, with even larger displays a 5-minute drive upstream. Details will be provided for guests visiting during firefly season.
❖ Starry Skies
On clear, moonless nights, the Milky Way is visible due to the lack of light pollution. The best stargazing season is from December to late February. Outdoor lights can be turned off for an even better view, and shooting stars may make an appearance.
❖ Sakura
Early April (usually the first week) is the best time for cherry blossoms on the property, where a large sakura tree blooms at the back of the house, with a smaller sakura tree at the end of the driveway. A later-blooming Oshima sakura tree blooms pink in mid to late April at the start of the driveway.
For stunning, crowd-free viewing, visit a magnificent weeping sakura tree just 9 minutes away or a row of sakura trees near the elementary school (4 minutes away). Drive 30 minutes up Mt. Gomadanzan for later-blooming sakura.
❖ Festivals
On November 3, the annual village festival celebrates the harvest. Guests are invited to join the festivities, including performing the lion dance inside the lion costume and trying out the festival drums. This intimate tradition has been celebrated for centuries.
In Tanabe City (1 hour away), the Tanabe Festival takes place on July 24–25, while the Benkei Festival, featuring fireworks on the first night, is held on the first Friday and Saturday of October.

The entire property is yours. There’s flat ground for kids to run around (sometimes our goats go there to eat grass). There’s also a outdoors seating area.
Other things to note
⬥ Getting Around
We’re in a peaceful, remote location, so cars are essential. While a 24-hour Lawson convenience store is just a 12-minute drive away, the nearest full-sized supermarket is almost an hour away in Tanabe City. The closest restaurant is also a 12-minute drive (over two hours on foot).
If you’re renting a car, options are available at Kii-Tanabe Station, Nanki-Shirahama Airport, or Kansai International Airport. The nearest airport is Nanki-Shirahama (90 minutes by car), but most guests arrive via Kansai International Airport (just over two hours away).
⬥ Summertime Bugs
Being surrounded by mountains and a river means that summer (June–September) brings some biting bugs like horseflies and gnats. We provide mosquito coils, bug spray, and window nets, but if you’re spending time outdoors, be prepared for the possibility of bites.
⬥ Swimming Safety
The river is usually calm and crystal clear, but it can be dangerous after rain. Always check conditions before swimming. The shallow waters under the bridge are great for wading, but the areas further upstream have deeper pools and rapids—children must be supervised at all times.
To avoid horseflies in summer, swim around noon when they are less active. They tend to come out on cloudy days and in the evening when the sun dips behind the mountains.
⬥ Wintertime Tips
From December to April, thick socks are recommended for extra warmth. Every room has heating, but slippers are provided only for the wooden floors. Tatami areas (bedrooms and entrance) should be enjoyed barefoot or in socks.
If you’re driving in winter, snow tires are required from December to March. Carrying snow chains is also a good idea in case of heavy snowfall.
