FREEDOM HOME is a majestic historic 1876 mansion with modern amenities, a first floor master suite, 15 rooms, and a private courtyard in the revitalized rivertown of Columbia.

The space
The 1876 mansion if full of modern amenities and historic charm. Enjoy original light fixtures, intricate custom woodworking, 15 large spacious rooms, and two full baths. The first floor bath can be enclosed in creating a first floor master suite for elderly guests or those wanting a private bath. Each room has 12’+ ceilings, original floors and doors (even some glass mercury knobs!), and beautiful views of the backyard courtyard or sprawling Mount Bethel Cemetery across the street.

The home has plenty of rooms (5 bedrooms, Dining Room, Living Room, Kitchen, study, sitting room, family/game room) to spread out and enjoy your own space! Use the large laundry room with folding tables, W&D, Ironing board and space for wedding gowns or quick wash between sports events!

The third floor features a newly designed vintage bedroom which is rapidly becoming the favorite of guests. Plus it has a private workspace/study (with an extra HD monitor) in case you need to get some work done…. And a secret room! Enjoy a walkout balcony overlooking the back patio, water fountain, and yard from the 2nd floor game room and lounge.

Full of antiques and local history - you’ll fall in love with the attention to detail of 140+ years of history coming to life. This is where the Underground Railroad got its name thanks to the richest black man in America, Stephen Smith (raised in Columbia where he purchased his freedom) who designed and built false bottom rail cars to transport slaves to freedom! It’s where the famous 1-mile covered bridge burning stopped the confederate army from invading Philadelphia - only to lead to the Battle of Gettysburg 3 days later as they turned back! Plus so much more…

Just steps away is miles of river trails, hiking, trail running, water sports, shops and antique warehouses, e-bike rental, cafes and breweries just steps from your door! Hop on Route 30 and explore Lancaster and York, Sight and Sound, Spooky Nook, markets and local attractions. Washington DC, Philly and Baltimore are easy day trips.

Guest access
A digital lock box will get you in. Enjoy full access to the entire home and find the secret room! Enjoy the private backyard courtyard and water fountain, large patio with outdoor seating, and second floor balcony.

Other things to note
The property is one block from local parks, across the street from the historic 1730 cemetery with walking paths, and two blocks from restaurants, antique shops, coffee shops and downtown attraction. It is just a few blocks from the river, where you can enjoy boating, kayaking, fishing, rail trail walking and bike riding, along with miles of hiking trails along the Susquehanna River.

The home is historic but beautifully restored and we’d like guests to honor the work we have done in giving you a chance to stay in such a unique piece of history. Please respect the property and enjoy the modern amenities, baths, kitchen, and thoughtful decor during your stay!

My family lives on a farmette in Columbia with our 5 kids, 20 chickens, 6 ducks, 1 dog, 4 cats, and 4 Holland Lop bunnies… and an ancient hermit crab. We enjoy homeschooling, exploring the great outdoors, pickleball, trail runs, and classic books. We planted in Lancaster after we met and fell in love at a local college… the rest is history.
