Neighborhood highlights
The Mawr is one of the most sparsely populated in Swansea, is the second largest ward in Swansea by land area. Most of the ward consists of rural farmland and open moorland. Cwm Clydach RSPB Reserve is next to the cottages. Public paths and trails are open from dawn to dusk. There are two main trails which begin at the main car park. The shortest, known as the Nixon trail is a 2.2 km circular walk. The 4.7 km Trussler trail is rugged in parts. Both trails connect with longer distance footpaths leading off the reserve.
It is ancient broadleaved woodland and is home to breeding pied flycatchers, redstarts, dippers and buzzards. The Lower Clydach River flows through the centre of the reserve.
There are two man-made reservoirs near the village of Felindre, in the Lliw valley, called the Lower Lliw Reservoir and the Upper Lliw Reservoir. The surrounding countryside is open to the public for recreational purposes including Swansea Adventures that offers both kayak and SUP board hire plus instructed group and private lessons.
Access to the Swansea cycle path is a couple of hundred yards from the cottages and there is bike station at the New Inn pub next door.
Canoes and single and double kayaks are available for hire for the public in Coed Gwilym Park, Clydach 1 mile from the cottages.
