Near Big Lake South Recreation Area. Nearby are pubs/eateries/ laundromat in the town of Big Lake. It’s a little slice of Paradise! You’ll never forget the fun you had camping! If you make a reservation, you must contact your host prior to accessing the property.
The space
**The Tent**
Weatherproof Cabin-Tent: You’ll have a rustic yet comfortable wilderness experience. The tents’ large 14'x17' dimensions with a 10’ ceiling pitch provides ample space for you and your fellow adventurers to relax and unwind.
The tent has a wood stove. Firewood can be purchased locally.
Do NOT chop fire wood or kindling in the tent. A chopping block is provided.
Furnishings: Two twin beds with mattresses and a double cot with no mattress are provided. Bedding is not provided. Couples like to move the single beds together and let the kids sleep on the double cot.
Wood Stove: Adds a rustic charm but also provides essential warmth during the cooler Alaskan nights. Firewood can be purchased locally. We do ask that you do NOT chop any wood or kindling inside the tent. We provide an outdoor chopping block expressly for this purpose.
This is a dry camp. There is a fresh potable-water pump just a five minute walk down the lane at the Big Lake Recreation Area. You’ll need to provide your own water jug.
**Exterior Features**
Scenic Deck: Step outside the tent onto a scenic deck, where you can take in the views of the surrounding forest. Maybe you’ll see a moose! It's the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee or star gazing at night.
**Amenities**
Clean Outhouse: For your convenience, a well-maintained and serviced outhouse privy is located on the property, providing a private and hygienic solution. Do not dispose of sanitary products in the privy. The sanitation waste management company will hate us if you do.
**Location**
Fernwood is conveniently located near the lake, and also the town of Big Lake. You’ll have access to the recreation area of Big Lake and its surroundings. Whether you're into water-based activities, hiking, or simply relaxing at camp.
A fresh drinking water potable water pump is located at the recreation area near the boat ramp area. The town of Big Lake has local eateries, pubs and a laundromat all within a very short distance.
Please note that this is an off-grid experience, providing you with a genuine escape from the trappings of urban life. Bring mosquito repellant with you. Bring water. Bring sleeping bags. Staying in a Hostel in Alaska is an adventure for sure! You’ll love the simple charm of staying in the Butler Tent at Fernwood in the heart of the Alaska.
We do provide a campfire ring pit.
Guest access
**Parking:**
Contact Host regarding parking before you access the property. Just a short 3-minute walk from your vehicle onto the property is the tent. The parking area ensures that the surrounding nature remains undisturbed. This arrangement offers the advantage of keeping the immediate vicinity of the canvas tent free from vehicles. This setup provides a secure spot for your vehicle during your stay.
Other things to note
If you see moose, do not interact or try to take selfies.
NOTICE : Two very big cats that are overly friendly freely roam the property. They think they own the place. They will insist that you pet them! They will probably sleep at your feet!
NO DOGS OR ANY OF YOUR PETS ALLOWED.
Fern Wood Camp is a work in progress. We are clearing the land to enlarge the camp. The piles of cut wood are not guest usage. The Host can sell you bundles.
