Peace and quiet

This home is in a quiet area.

Room in a home

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
A colourful mid-century home in suburban Howick. Just a few kilometres walk from the centre of town, shops and restaurants.

Should you prefer dishevelled edges to chain store chic, then this space in my home is right for you. Summer night sounds include fruit bats and frogs, in winter a spotted eagle owl is often heard.

Rewilding and lighter living are core principles. Sheets will not be ironed, there are no lights on at night, solar jars and gas kettle to deal with load-shedding.

The space
A large property with big trees and an established garden. The house is spacious. Please note that you are sharing my home - it is not seperate. One carpeted BnB bedroom has an extra-length queen-sized bed, a bedside table, cupboards with hanging space and drawers, mirrors, hot water bottles and extra rugs, and a retro chair. It gets afternoon sun through the venetian blinds and looks out onto the garden and adjacent veranda. The ensuite bathroom has a bath and a shower.

An adjacent bedroom has two 3/4 beds and a bathroom (not en-suite and no shower). Parquet flooring, comfy armchairs, plenty of cupboard space, venetian blinds and a garden view. The two rooms can be booked together, or separately.

Guest access
Guests will have their own bedroom and bathroom in my home but are free to use the kitchen, sit in the library to work, relax on the veranda or in the garden. There is no covered parking, but the property is securely fenced and the gate is locked at all times.

During your stay
I will be available to make suggestions and give advice before you visit, when you arrive, and during your stay. I work from home, so am around most of the time. Whats App is my preferred method of communication.

Other things to note
The mostly indigenous garden is wild and weedy - especially to benefit pollinators. You will come across spiders, butterflies and other creatures. No insecticides or harmful chemicals are used indoors or outdoors.

Resident African dog Bean is friendly and always delighted to have visitors. However, once she has greeted you, she will get on with her own life and not bother you. You are definitely staying with me, in my home. My bedroom is just across the passage from yours so we will certainly bump into one another!

I am passionate about Slow Food, rewilding and living locally. I know all the best spots to find good food, where to forage and which events you simply cannot miss. You might like to book an edible weed experience, local food walk or a wild lunch while you are here?

Occasionally workshops, long table lunches and intimate events are hosted during the day at Braemar. You will be advised of these when you book.

What makes my home unique: My home is a reflection of my life.
I live in Howick, near the river with my African dog, Bean. I write, forage for food, take long walks in the hills, watch the moon and live as lightly on our planet as possible. Holidays are usually road trips in South Africa visiting small towns to share my passion for foraging. I enjoy finding local food and cooking delicious vegetarian meals that celebrate the area along the way.
