Stay in a charming historic cottage on the Isle of Portland, full of cosy character and warmth. Perfect for couples, families, walkers and dog lovers, it’s ideally placed for exploring the Jurassic Coast, Chesil Beach and dramatic coastal paths. Enjoy family adventures, scenic dog walks and days by the sea before returning to a welcoming retreat. On clear nights, head to nearby Pulpit Rock, spectacular dark skies with no light pollution between you and France, the Milky Way can be breathtaking.

The space
Inspired by Portland’s rich maritime heritage, this characterful cottage captures the spirit of a bygone seafaring age. Thoughtfully styled with historic details, each room evokes the atmosphere of the golden age of piracy, when Portland’s rugged coastline was renowned for smugglers, sailors and seafaring tales. Full of warmth and character, the cottage blends timeless nautical charm with modern comfort for a memorable coastal escape.

Guest access
Boatswain’s Watch is a charming historic cottage full of character, and with that comes some original features to be aware of. The doorway is lower and narrower than modern homes, so taller guests may need to mind their heads. The staircase is traditionally steep and does not have a handrail, which may not suit guests with limited mobility. The master bedroom features a traditional double bed with a headboard and footboard, which very tall guests may find a little snug.

Other things to note
A quaint tiny front door and lobby so tall people please mind your head! The Isle of Portland is a peninsular rock, Portland stone is porous, so it and weeps and sheds salt.

We’ll take care of the rubbish and recycling at the end of your stay. If your voyage is a little longer and the bins are filling up, just let us know and we can arrange collection during your stay. One small ask — please never leave bin bags outside, or the local seagulls may think you’ve laid on a feast on for them!

Neighborhood highlights

Fortuneswell is a village on the Isle of Portland, in Dorset, England. It lies on steeply sloping land on the northern edge of the island, where Chesil Beach connects the island to the mainland and Portland Harbour. Fortuneswell has been designated as a conservation area, to protect its special architectural and historic interest.

The village's intriguing streets wind their way up the steep hills of the island, which rise from sea level near the amazing Chesil Beach to a height of 500 feet at the top of the island.

Fortuneswell takes advantage of the best of the majestic views that Portland has - a view that stretches for dozens of miles from Start Point in Devon, around Lyme Bay in the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, across to the resort of Weymouth, and over the rolling hills into the rest of Dorset beyond.

Three minutes walk to Chesil Beach you will find a beachside cafe at Chesil Cove, along with a traditional English public house. Both of which have stunning views across the Jurassic Coast and West Bay.

Boatswain's Watch is situated close to Portland marina for sailing, water sports, fishing and diving. There are shops and amenities for your convenience, close by.

To the West, guests can explore Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast with destinations such as Abbotsbury, West Bay and Lyme Regis all within reach. The cottage is situated on the national coastal path, which offers unique UK wildlife and bird watching opportunities. The location is also an excellent area for dog walking.

Weymouth Harbour is located to the East, which is easily accessible by car, bus or a brisk walk along the Chesil beach path. Weymouth offers harbour-side pubs and restaurants and a traditional English seaside with stunning views of Portland and Osmington Bay.
