The Quarry (aka 'Bighousedevon') is a stunning, light filled, detached Victorian house. Built for an Admiral in 1892 and retaining much grandeur. The SW coastal path runs past the garden for cliff top walks.
1/2 acre terraced gardens, nearest beach a 5 min walk and 15 min stroll to the pretty harbour & independent eateries.
The space
The Quarry's interior is filled with art, books, games and vintage finds. It's a very comfortable, warm and relaxing place. It was a home for many years and is furnished as such.
The original size of all the bedrooms has been kept - so they’re large and offer wonderful views. You'll find 2 magnificent family bathrooms, one with an impressive vintage claw foot tub, and 2 en suites. They are kept simple - wooden floors, bright paintings & vintage furniture. Light and airy in the summer, with warm throws & hot water bottles for chilly winter nights. There are beds to sleep 13 in 7 bedrooms as well as two single futons on top floor to accommodate 2 extra children.
The large sitting/dining room/library has 2 pairs of original French doors leading onto a sea view terrace with table and chairs and stunning views. Its painted a gorgeous deep blue which contrasts beautifully with the bright paintings and the white shelves full of books and games ( Scrabble, Monopoly, Trivial pursuit and Articulate). The dining table can sit all guests, and there's plenty of seating in the sitting room. There are always lots of logs in the porch area for the open fire in the sitting room. The house is great for winter stays.
The kitchen/ breakfast area is a similar size, with a cosy AGA. The best quality appliances have been used (Miele extra size oven, Bosch dishwasher, big American fridge / freezer) guests comment on how wonderfully equipped the kitchen is. There’s also a walk in larder and laundry room.
The owners can recommend local caterers to help with cooking.
Guest access
The house is detached and set in 1/2 acre of terraced gardens, with lots of quiet areas to hide away with a book, enjoy the views, or for kids to have adventures. The original Vine Room is full of grapes & nectarines. The whole area is yours to enjoy.
Other things to note
We have a very steep driveway... its fine to drive up, but just take it easy. The benefit of the steep drive are the wonderful views & the feeling of being hidden away whilst you're actually really near everything.
We can offer long weekends or midweek stays - do get in touch for prices.
2 well behaved dogs allowed . We charge £20 per dog to allow for extra cleaning. Our housekeeper collects this directly on arrival (note the Air BnB pricing for pets is not correct and we collect directly)
We also have two single futons for 2 extra guests (really designed for kids) which are on second floor (in bedrooms 5 and 6) and can allow up to 15 people to stay. We charge £20 per futon given need to make it up and extra bedding costs. Again our housekeeper will collect this on arrival. (again note the Air BnB pricing for extra guests is not correct and we collect directly on arrival)
The Queen bed in Bedroom 2 can also be made up as 2 singles. Please let us know a week before arrival for this to be done.
