Ardfern Roundhouse is a one-of-a-kind holiday experience with spectacular views of Loch Craignish and its own avenue of 200-year-old beech trees. More of a work of art than a cabin, the roundhouse is made of larch with limewashed hempcrete walls, spruce cladding, recycled maple floors and a hairy turf roof. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and feel close to nature.

The space
The main circular living/dining room is large and high-ceilinged and is lit from above by a central dome. Everything has been crafted to fit, with a cosy woodstove, comfortable seats, a dining table and an extensive kitchen counter with large Belfast sink, fridge/freezer, electric oven and gas hob built into a counter of local beech. The views of the loch and hills from the sink and the hob are hard to beat.

The roundhouse sleeps four. In a room at the back there is a king-sized double bed and there is an adjoining bunkroom with two rustic bunk beds built from tree trunks.

Off the main room there is a charming bathroom with a composting toilet, a hand basin and a shower.

If you feel like cooking outside there is a large fire pit and a picnic table and all the barbecue equipment you could possibly need, as well as a small herb garden.

We supply a starter pack of firewood, towels, bedding, eco-soaps & cleaning products, crockery, cutlery, glassware, pots and pans and a kettle and toaster.

For inside entertainment, there are Bluetooth speakers, and a large selection of books, games, and jigsaw puzzles. There is no wi-fi, but you can get an excellent 4G signal on your phone.

Outside, we have several sets of boules, and you even have your own three-hole pitch and putt course running under the beech trees – we provide a selection of old clubs and a bucket of golf balls.

The roundhouse is the perfect spot for exploring the area by car, by bike or on foot. The peninsula is full of wonderful walks, particularly along the coast where you may be lucky enough to see otters.

There is wildlife all around. Owls live in the beech trees and you will hear them hunting at night. You will see pipistrelle bats fluttering in and out of the trees as the sun goes down. You are very likely to spot roe deer grazing if you are up early enough, and if you’re lucky you might even see a Sea Eagle hovering above.

The roundhouse has been designed and built with care and love to fit with nature. Power comes from a solar array further down the hill. We hope you can experience the magical qualities of the place and enjoy a local dram or a hot chocolate by the fire while watching the stars come out over the loch.

Guest access
There is a parking area with your own private parking space and room nearby for another car. Follow the silver arrow signs up the hill from opposite the church.

Other things to note
There are wildlife tours, a museum, and great places to eat and drink a short walk or drive away.

The Galley of Lorne Inn is a ten-minute walk down the track in the village of Ardfern. A few more minutes and you can reach the very well-stocked Ardfern Village Store and the Ardfern Yacht Centre, from which wildlife trips depart daily in the summer to the Corrievreckan whirlpool and the Isle of Jura.

You can drive fifteen minutes (an hour’s gentle walk) to Lunga Stables for horse riding or the Lord of the Isles pub at Craobh Haven, or twenty minutes to Kilmartin Museum, the standing stones and Dunadd fort, where the first kings of Scotland were crowned.

Crinan, Kilmartin, Kilmichael, Kilmelfort are all 20 or 30 minutes away with more great places to eat. Oban, where the ferries depart to the Hebrides and where the Oban Distillery gives an excellent tasting tour, is a 40 minute drive north.
