Tanjung Karang, a small town on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia, immerses visitors in the rustic Malay countryside. Nature lovers will enjoy a night boat trip down the river to witness one of the largest firefly colonies in the world, while history buffs can visit the nearby Kuala Selangor Historical Museum to learn about the history of the area. The bustling big-city attractions of Kuala Lumpur are a few hours’ drive or bus ride away.

Tanjung Karang sits on the Sungai Tengi River, whose lush environment makes it a haven for rice production. The surrounding lands are covered in rice fields, and in nearby Sekinchan, you can visit a rice processing plant that houses a museum. Another prominent natural feature in the area is the white-sand Pantai Redang Beach, on the Strait of Malacca, lined with beach huts that serve snacks and seafood dishes. People also come here to stop by the Sekinchan Wishing Tree, ornamented by thousands of strands of red cloth on which visitors have written their wishes.

Because of its location close to the equator, Malaysia remains hot and very humid all year round. You’re likely to see at least some rainfall almost every day, but November is by far the rainiest month. June, July, and August are the driest months, which is also when humidity levels are at the most tolerable. Ramadan, whose dates change every year, is a great time to travel to Tanjung Karang, as the entire city is lit up to celebrate the month-long holiday. If you do visit during this time, be aware that the local Muslim population will be fasting from sun-up to sundown. This is a great time to enjoy the night markets that take over the streets after dark.

Kuala Selangor Nature Park

This one-square-mile coastal park features dense mangrove forests, brackish lakes, and a one-mile hiking trail that may let you glimpse silver leaf monkeys, herons, and macaques, as well as indigenous Malaysian plant species like the morinda citrifolia tree. A great way to observe the vast wetlands is from one of the three viewing towers in the park.

Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park

Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, to the southeast of town, is known for its fireflies, or as the locals call them, kelip-kelip. The fireflies dwell along the banks of the Selangor River and feed on the mangrove trees that grow in the salty waters. At this park, you can take nighttime rides on a traditional sampan (small boat) down the river and observe the glimmering fireflies up close.

Bukit Melawati

Bukit Melawati, just south of Tanjung Karang, is a hill station that overlooks the Strait of Malacca. You can wander among the ruins of the 18th-century Kota Melawati fort, built to protect the city from invading Dutch forces. Aside from impressive landscape views, this hill station also features a lighthouse. You can walk or take a tram ride to the top.
