An excellent way to spend the morning Mark's knowledge was exceptional

My husband (30 male) and I (31 female) had a wonderful time with Mark. His decades of experience in botany and natural sciences really shown during our experience. We were able to learn about the different plants, trees, and other foliage that support the bird and animal population around Cape Town. As we had already been to Boulders Beach to see the African penguins, we spent 4 hours at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. While there, we saw about two dozen species of birds including the rufous-breasted sparrowhawk, Cape sugarbird, malachite sunbird, and southern double collared sunbird. We then went to Rondevlei - As there had been significant rainfall, there were fewer shorebirds than normal. That being said, we saw many duck species new to us (unfortunately no kingfishers!) as well as a beautiful angulate tortoise. We ended the day at Strandfontein and found a rare squacco heron - a vagrant in these parts. Great, educational day all around!

Mark is someone whose love for his hometown and its outdoors is immediately palpable – he grew up in its mountains and has an encyclopaedic knowledge about the Cape ecosystem and environment.
