The Herman Hayssen House
Located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Herman Hayssen House is a stunning Queen Anne-style Victorian manor built in 1895 and designed by renowned architect Charles Hilpertshauser. This home was not only Herman Hayssen’s residence but also the birthplace of his legacy. In 1910, Hayssen invented and patented the first automatic bread wrapping machine in the very three-car brick garage that still stands in the backyard today. This invention marked the beginning of the Hayssen brand, and Hayssen, who later headed Hayssen Manufacturing Company, was also a member of the Kohler, Hayssen & Stehn Company, which developed into what is now the Kohler Co.

Spanning over 4,500 square feet, the home features four spacious bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms. It showcases exquisite Queen Anne craftsmanship, with stained glass windows, rich hardwood floors, and original light fixtures. The parlor includes a baby grand piano, while the formal dining room, complete with a built-in bar and additional stained glass, creates the perfect space for gatherings. Two wood-burning fireplaces add warmth and historic charm.

Set on just over half an acre, the property includes a beautifully manicured lawn, a peaceful garden pond, a designer patio, and an outdoor grilling area. Guests can unwind around the fire pit or enjoy the serene backyard, frequently visited by birds, mallards, and rabbits. These outdoor spaces, combined with the home’s rich history, offer a truly unique and tranquil escape.

Located just minutes from downtown Sheboygan and the Lake Michigan waterfront, the Herman Hayssen House is perfect for intimate events, elopements, or quiet retreats. With its historic Queen Anne architecture, four bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, and its role in both the Hayssen and Kohler legacies, this home stands as a tribute to Wisconsin’s industrial heritage and architectural beauty.
